ᐅ How can I properly stabilize Billy bookcases on carpeted floors?

Hello everyone, some time ago I ordered and have now assembled my Billy shelves from IKEA. Unfortunately, I am currently facing the problem that these shelves are not very stable on my soft carpeted floor. The shelf wobbles slightly, and even light loads affect its stability. I am particularly interested in methods to properly stabilize the Billy shelves on carpeted floors without making major modifications or affecting the appearance. Are there special base plates, anchors, or other practical solutions that have proven effective? It would also be helpful to know how to optimize the connection between the shelf, wall, and floor to ensure everything stands as securely and permanently as possible. Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

To address the topic in more detail: With a carpet thickness of 12 mm (0.5 inches), you do have a soft and flexible base that does not distribute the point load of the shelf feet effectively. I would recommend first creating a stable, full-surface substructure, for example, using an MDF board 10–12 mm (0.4–0.5 inches) thick, cut precisely to the shelf's footprint. It is important to position this board on the carpet before assembly and ensure it is installed evenly.

Additionally, you can attach small adjustable feet to the shelf legs (for example, furniture feet with height adjustment) to compensate for unevenness. This helps reduce wobbling.

The wall mounting should allow for height adjustment—meaning it should not be rigid but have some play to prevent stress. Another detail: in some cases, it is worth placing wooden or aluminum strips under the shelf rails to distribute the load better on the carpet and prevent sinking.

If possible, use non-slip materials on the underside of the stabilizing board, such as synthetic rubber mats cut to size. I am also curious about the intended frequency of use and load capacity you are planning—permanent heavy loading requires different solutions than occasional shelving.

The wall mounting is installed with appropriate anchors, and the shelf is attached to a load-bearing drywall partition

That’s an important detail, thanks! Drywall partitions can be critical depending on the type of anchors and the load involved. Therefore, I strongly recommend ensuring adequate measures against tipping – a solid combination of secure wall mounting and the base plate as a backup is ideal.

Additionally, you could try using small rubber pads or furniture stoppers between the base and the carpet to increase friction without damaging the carpet. Sometimes it also helps to fix the shelf slightly with construction adhesive to the base if reversible fixing isn’t an option.

Have you cleaned and checked the shelf feet? Sometimes slight unevenness or irregular contact points on the feet after installation can cause instability.

One more tip from my experience: if you don’t want to install a wooden or MDF substructure, there are special furniture gliders with a non-slip rubber coating that work well on carpets. You can either glue or screw them under the feet. They increase friction and reduce sinking.

It has also proven effective to press the shelf slightly against the wall from the bottom of the back side using a bracket or support; this will significantly reduce tipping movements.

In summary: secure the shelf firmly to the wall, improve the contact surface under the feet, and ensure resistance to tipping and slipping. With this, you’re very close to a stable solution. 🙂

For even more stability on carpeted floors, I recommend placing a flat board under the shelf feet. This prevents sinking. You should also always secure the shelf to the wall. Sometimes, small rubber pads under the board can help prevent slipping.
