I am looking for proven methods to permanently improve the stability of my IKEA BESTÅ furniture. I have noticed that the cabinets tend to wobble slightly or loosen at the joints, especially under higher loads or after extended use. I am particularly interested in professional or practical techniques to:
- better connect the individual modules,
- prevent warping of the panels,
- and ensure long-term stability against tipping or giving way.

Does anyone have practical experience with additional reinforcements such as metal brackets, better screws, or special assembly methods? Tips regarding the material properties of the BESTÅ system components and their limitations would also be helpful to implement appropriate measures more effectively.

From experience, I can say that reinforcing the joints with additional wood glue along with screws often helps. Wood glue cures very firmly and permanently bonds the panels. To do this:

- Slightly bevel and sand all edges before assembly to ensure better contact.
- Insert screws not only into the dowel holes but also additionally into the panel edges.
- Metal brackets on the back provide extra stability.

Another tip: using small, non-reflective spacers underneath allows for comfortable air circulation, which helps prevent material warping.

In practice, optimizing the stability of BESTÅ mainly concerns load distribution and connection techniques. Some additional tips:

- Use fine-thread screws for better grip in wood-based materials.
- Avoid longer freestanding shelves without intermediate braces.
- Spacers or adjustable feet can compensate for height differences and thus prevent tilting.

Another recommendation: the installation of additional cross braces or steel angle profiles. These can be mounted directly on the side panels or the back panel to significantly increase torsional rigidity.

Simple:
- Replace or reinforce the back panel
- Attach the cabinet to the wall
- Use better screws

This makes the BESTÅ stable.

How heavily loaded are the BESTÅ posts on your end? Do you mainly use doors, drawers, or open compartments?

Thank you for the detailed response. I primarily use the BESTÅ as a combination of doors and drawers in living and media rooms. The loads are mixed, often books and electronics, occasionally decorative items. The furniture is placed against a solid wall, but currently, it is not fixed because I frequently rearrange the room.

Do you use wood glue at the joints?

So far, I have only used the original IKEA connectors without glue. I will definitely try that; it sounds reasonable.

Can anyone specifically recommend how and exactly where to attach the metal brackets to achieve maximum effectiveness? I also want to avoid them being visible or obtrusive.

The best way to place the brackets is at the inside corners of the cabinet joints, where the side panel meets the bottom and top panels, on both the left and right sides. Since they are mounted on the inside, they remain discreet. Important:

- The brackets should lie flat and be secured with screws that have enough grip in both panels.
- Make sure not to damage any designated joint areas or dowel holes.
- If you also use cross braces, install them in the middle or upper section, depending on the cabinet height.

As a general rule: the more corner joints you reinforce, the less movement will occur. A combination of glue, screws, and brackets is the best solution.
