Hello everyone, I’m planning to fit some Billy shelves from IKEA into the sloped ceilings of my attic as efficiently as possible. Since the angled walls usually don’t match standard shelves directly, I’m looking for practical solutions on how to modify or combine the shelves so they look neat while maximizing space use. Are there any clever hacks or proven construction methods anyone can recommend for installing Billy shelves under sloped ceilings? I’m especially interested in how to make cutouts or adjustments to the shelves without compromising stability, and whether there are suitable add-on parts available. I look forward to your tips and experiences!
The best way to adapt Billy shelves to sloped ceilings is by combining several smaller shelves. This allows for precise adjustment of the height and better use of gaps. The back panel can also be extended with cut-to-size boards, making the unit look more stable and refined.
I can easily understand how standing in front of a sloped ceiling and not knowing how to best adjust the shelves can be frustrating. I experienced something similar, and it was annoying to have to cut test pieces and experiment at first. But it’s worth taking the time and applying some small tricks – for example, using flexible adjustments or shelves that can be moved precisely in height. This makes the system much more versatile and creates a more comfortable feeling in the room. Good luck with it, it will definitely turn out great!

You can, for example, cut the boards above the slope or shorten them from the front. That might be enough for practical fans, but honestly: a sawed-off Billy shelf on a slope often looks unfinished. If you take a little time, you can create a really high-quality unit with wooden strips and paint matching the color. Why settle for half measures? I also think that Billy as a mass-produced product should change its look for this kind of problem – DIY is part of it! 😉

Secure shelves firmly to the wall to minimize the risk of tipping over. Absolutely essential, otherwise you wake up to a pile of books and just think, “Oops!”

Make a cardboard mock-up first to test how deep and how high the shelves should be before you start cutting or screwing. That’s a great tip! I would add that mounting small support strips on the wall, where you can quickly place and adjust the shelves, really helps. It reduces mistakes and makes cutting much easier.
