TEO_KAR6Hello everyone,
I recently assembled several IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets, which are currently installed against the wall. Now I want to move the units within the room, but without completely dismantling the cabinets—that is, without taking every part apart, as I find that very time-consuming and I also want to avoid the risk of warping or damaging anything.
My question is: How can I move or reposition IKEA Metod cabinets as carefully and safely as possible without fully disassembling them? Which components might need to be loosened, which should stay fixed, and are there any special tips or tools that can make the process easier?
I look forward to your experiences and advice!

Basically, you should first remove the doors and fronts to prevent damage while moving them. Then, disconnect the cabinets at the connectors, but do not take them completely apart. After that, you can carefully shift them. Make sure not to tilt the cabinets to avoid damaging the fastenings.
Hello TEO_KAR6,
I can understand your situation well; Metod cabinets are not easy to move once they are installed. The main challenge is mainly the connection with the cam locks and the stability if you don’t disassemble everything.
My advice:
- Be sure to completely remove doors and drawers and store them safely.
- If possible, partially loosen the connectors on the cabinets – usually, it is enough to loosen the cam locks on the side or back slightly so you can separate the modules easily.
- It's best to distribute the weight between two people, holding firmly under the countertop or inside the cabinet – always avoid unnecessary tilting.
- If the cabinet carcass is fixed to the wall, first detach the wall mounting before trying to move the cabinet.
- Use furniture sliders or thick pieces of cardboard under the feet to prevent scratches and make it easier to slide the cabinet.
Important: If you only want to reposition the cabinets, it is usually enough to slightly loosen the connection without taking everything apart. This will help you avoid damage or warping.
Hope this helps you!

How can I move or reposition IKEA Metod cabinets as gently and safely as possible without having to completely dismantle them?Oh, good question! I’d almost say the cabinets are like a puzzle with thick pieces—you don’t want to completely take them apart, but you still need to move them. 😄
From my experience:
- Remove the doors and drawers first, otherwise it gets messy and you risk scratches.
- Then it’s best to loosen the hooks and connector screws on the sides so the individual units are no longer tightly locked together.
- Be careful that the carcasses don’t swing or get caught, as that can cause dents or damage.
- It helps if you’re holding a cup of encouraging coffee while carrying them—it makes the process easier!
Sure, it’s no magic trick, but it’s much gentler than fully dismantling and reassembling. Hope my bit of fun here still helped you!

As a general rule, you should first remove the doors and front panels to avoid damage when moving them. This is definitely an important principle. However, I wonder if this method is always practical.
1. Removing doors often means unlocking the hinges – which can be quite tricky on some Metod models.
2. If the cabinet is very heavy, moving it without fully dismantling the connection screws can be quite challenging and might permanently damage the fasteners.
I think it’s also important to clarify how the cabinets are fixed to the wall and whether these fixtures can be released without disassembly.
Also: Are there any experiences regarding how often moving this kind of furniture is actually advisable? Frequent partial disassembly could weaken the overall stability over time.
Perhaps someone can share long-term experiences here?
