Hello everyone, I am planning to modify some IKEA Malm furniture to make it more child-friendly and would greatly appreciate any tips and experiences.

Specifically, I’m referring to the MALM desk and MALM dressers that we use at home. My goal is to make the furniture safer and more practical for young children: for example, by eliminating sharp edges, installing child-safe handles, or adjusting the height.

I’m also interested in ideas on how to prevent drawers from slamming shut or how to make the furniture more stable against tipping, as little ones are usually very energetic.

Perhaps someone has already used creative inserts or materials to make the furniture both childproof and visually appealing.

Thank you in advance for your help, constructive suggestions, and shared experiences!

Attach soft edge protectors.
Install soft-close slides.
Mount tilt protection according to the instructions.
Cover handles with silicone if necessary or replace them.
Adjust height using a stool or chair.
Done.

Of course, soft-close runners prevent the loud slamming of drawers.

Thanks for the clear overview! I have a question:

Are there specific models or types of soft-close runners that work particularly well with Malm drawers? I want to avoid the drawer not closing properly or sticking due to dampers that are too weak.

Also, my MALM desk has wooden handle strips – do you have any experience with smoothing or childproofing these without affecting the wood appearance? Maybe with a transparent protective coating?

Looking forward to more practical tips!

Yes, for MALM drawers, "push-to-close" soft-close slides from manufacturers like Blum or Hettich are especially suitable. They are sturdy and easy to install, making them ideal for heavy drawers.

It is important to pay attention to the correct dimensions and load capacities—since MALM uses relatively thin materials, it is advisable to purchase a complete set specifically designed for drawers.

A transparent, matte plastic coating or a soft silicone-based overcoat works well here. It protects against splinters and makes the surface more tactile.

Alternatively, lightly round the edges with fine sandpaper and treat the wood with a natural hard wax. This preserves the natural wood feel while making it safer for children.
