Hello everyone,
I am planning to modify a piece of furniture from the IKEA Malm series, but I don’t yet have a clear idea of the best approach. I am particularly interested in how to maintain or even improve the stability and functionality of the furniture.
I am also curious about which tools and materials are best suited for this project, as I want to minimize any damage to the furniture. Are there established techniques or useful tips, especially for shortening drawers or adding extra compartments?
I would appreciate concrete advice and possible methods, as I want to customize the furniture to fit my specific space. Thanks in advance!

If you don’t have much experience with woodworking yet, I recommend practicing on a similar piece of wood firstAbsolutely right! Small test sessions with some wood scraps can help reduce your fear of the saw ;-)
Also, I would suggest doing the renovation with a good friend – working together is more enjoyable and a second pair of eyes often spots mistakes faster.
And don’t forget: Always ensure good ventilation when painting or working with glue. Good luck!

I want to make the dresser overall a bit narrower since it will be placed against a narrow wall. This means I would need to reduce the width of the side panels by about 10 cm (4 inches).Reducing the width of the side panels is the most critical point. Melamine furniture like Malm cannot handle major modifications without significantly affecting stability. Make sure that after trimming, both the top and bottom edges are perfectly flat so the furniture will still stand properly.

Another idea is to reinforce the top panelFor reinforcement, an additional panel made of plywood or MDF (at least 18 mm (0.7 inches) thick) is well suited; as mentioned, be sure to adjust the measurements precisely. Alternatively, hidden metal brackets can be used, screwed from the inside onto the top panel.
How experienced are you with handling edge banding and painting?
If you like, we can also create a step-by-step modification plan tailored exactly to your measurements.

How much experience do you have with edge banding and paintwork? My experience with edge banding is quite limited; I have only re-edged a tabletop once. It turned out okay, but it wasn’t perfect and definitely requires practice.
Unfortunately, I have almost no experience with paintwork. I definitely want to avoid color differences or an uneven surface.
A step-by-step plan would be great. I can probably disassemble the dresser completely – I feel confident doing that.
One more question: How would you handle the original screws and dowels if I can’t use them anymore because of shortening? Should I use completely new ones or repair and reuse the same ones later on? Thanks!
