Good morning everyone, I have several Malm dressers from IKEA at home and I’m wondering about the best ways to modify them to maximize storage space. It’s less about adding more dressers and more about changing or expanding the existing furniture structure itself. Where are the greatest opportunities? For example, through additional shelves, increasing the depth, or perhaps using the gaps between units? I’m especially interested in practical and sturdy solutions that can be implemented with a reasonable amount of DIY effort.

Interesting, but a critical question: Are these inserts or modifications actually tested regarding the load capacity of the Malm chest of drawers? I ask because IKEA furniture is often designed to withstand specific loads. Thoughtless modifications can potentially compromise stability and, in the worst case, cause damage. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on how to ensure or improve load-bearing capacity when the chest of drawers is altered?

Very valid question. Basically, when it comes to shelves, the material should not be too thin, and the fixing points on the inside of the side panels should be placed close to the bottom and top to avoid flexibility. Additionally, reinforcing the back panel or installing extra cross braces, for example screwed in from behind, can help. Screw connections are also more stable than just dowels and glue. I would limit the load on individual shelves to a maximum of 10-15 kg (22-33 lbs); otherwise, it’s better to use a separate piece of furniture as an extension.

This is all really motivating, thanks to everyone! I want to add: For me, installing long organizer boxes in the drawers was brilliant. It makes perfect use of small gaps! 🙂 For larger areas, I screwed a narrow strip onto the back of the dresser to create a shelf on top. More storage space and a truly unique look! The transformation was fantastic – give it a try, you can do it!
