Hello everyone, I am planning to remodel my IKEA Metod kitchen because I urgently need more storage space. I am particularly interested in how to modify or add to the furniture to make the most efficient use of the available space – both in the cabinets and wall cabinets, and possibly also in the corners. I have already considered additional pull-outs, shelves, or internal drawers, but I am not sure which solutions are compatible and practical. Does anyone have experience with this, for example through accessory sets, DIY modifications, or alternative installation methods? I would really appreciate any tips and examples on how to structurally modify IKEA Metod kitchen furniture to increase storage capacity without having to buy completely new cabinets.

Hello MINGA, I am familiar with your concern because I also wanted to optimize my Metod kitchen some time ago. In general, storage space can be significantly improved by the following measures:

- Interior drawers (pull-out drawers inside the cabinet) instead of traditional shelves, allowing easy access to the back areas.
- More adjustable shelves or flexible spacing to better utilize vertical space.
- Corner carousel units or corner drawers for the base corner cabinets, which are often dead corners otherwise.
- Use of pull-out pantry units for tall, narrow bottles or food storage.

IKEA offers some of these solutions as accessories, but third-party accessories can also be used. It is important to check the measurements carefully, as the Metod depth may vary. If you are handy, a DIY modification with additional brackets or shelves can be very effective. For example, custom intermediate shelves can be made from thin plywood panels. Make sure the drawer runners remain compatible, so avoid unsuitable materials or similar issues.

If you want more details about corner cabinets or specific maintenance for interior drawers, I would be happy to explain further.

I would recommend using pull-out drawers inside cabinets instead of regular shelves. Corner cabinets with a carousel are also very practical. Additionally, pull-out pantry cabinets are helpful if you need to store tall items. These options can significantly increase your storage space.

Storage optimization for IKEA Metod kitchen cabinets can be approached systematically.

First, it is important to know the standard internal dimensions of Metod cabinets: the depth is usually 58 cm (23 inches), and the width typically ranges between 40 and 80 cm (16 to 31 inches) for base cabinets. Consequently, the key to increasing storage space is better interior organization and layout, rather than enlarging the cabinet dimensions.

Recommended modifications include:
- Installing internal pull-outs or deep drawers to make better use of the depth.
- Fully utilizing the cabinet height with adjustable shelves that can be repositioned or added as needed.
- Using corner carousels or corner drawers, since corners are often underutilized.
- Adding pantry-style cabinets with specialized shelves to accommodate narrow and tall items.

Note that when altering the cabinet structure (e.g., adding custom shelves), attention must be paid to the drilling hole pattern and load capacity. Compatibility between drawer hardware and cabinet fronts must also be maintained.

In summary, the focus should be on maximizing space usage within the existing cabinet dimensions. A complete reconstruction that changes frames or measurements is usually very complex and recommended only for very specific requirements.

Exactly, I agree completely. During my renovation, I also felt a bit overwhelmed at first because the information seemed quite technical. It’s important not to get discouraged, as small steps can make a big difference.

For me, interior pull-outs made the biggest impact. They allowed better use of the lower cabinets without having to constantly unload everything. The corner cabinets were a bit tricky though – the carousel was a practical solution, but the installation took quite some time and patience. I initially had doubts about stability, but with the right brackets it holds up really well.

If you’re interested in details about specific item numbers or the additional fittings IKEA offers for this, I’m happy to share my experience. What really helped me was making a list beforehand of what I use daily and how to store it clearly. Feel free to ask if you have any questions.

Regarding wall cabinets: It often helps to install additional adjustable shelves and use narrow pull-out baskets that can be securely mounted. This way, you can optimize the vertical space much better since there is often wasted space between the shelves.

For internal drawers, the original IKEA accessories are recommended because the back panels and side walls of Metod units are standardized. If you decide to use third-party products, make sure to carefully check the measurements and installation instructions to avoid any issues. Many complementary products are now designed specifically for Metod.

Additionally, you can try enhancing the existing cabinet structure by adding custom shelves made of thin wood or metal profiles, provided you make good use of the pre-drilled holes in the carcasses.
