I’m facing the challenge of redesigning and configuring my small bedroom using IKEA Besta furniture so that it works optimally without unnecessarily shrinking or cluttering the space. Specifically, I have a room of about 10 sqm (108 sq ft) with limited space for larger furniture pieces. My goal is to create a practical, space-saving, and visually appealing solution using Besta shelves and cabinets.
I am particularly interested in the following aspects:
- Are there smart modifications or modular options within the Besta system that are especially suitable for small rooms?
- Which dimensions or combinations should I prioritize to maximize storage while keeping the room feeling open?
- Are there functional accessories (such as doors, inserts, or specific shelf dividers) that make the furniture more comfortable to use in a bedroom?
So far, I have used the furniture in a more traditional way, but now I’d like to experiment with adjustments—perhaps open shelving, sliding doors, or even altered configurations.
I look forward to your knowledge and experiences—thanks in advance for all tips and suggestions!

Which dimensions or combinations should I prefer to maximize storage space while keeping the room airy?I would recommend choosing the Besta modules in the 60x64 cm (24x25 inches) size, if that fits. Combine them more vertically rather than wide to save floor space. Doors are great if you want a neat appearance; otherwise, open shelves create a more airy feel. Sliding doors can be added later, which is space-saving and stylish.
Interesting that you are choosing Besta. For small bedrooms, I often find IKEA’s furniture ranges overrated, and Besta in particular usually looks quite bulky.
I always wonder if DIY modifications with Besta actually bring much benefit. Perhaps it would be smarter to generally look for slimmer furniture designed specifically for bedrooms, rather than experimenting extensively and ending up overwhelming the space.
Because honestly, does it really make sense to fill small rooms with bulky modular furniture, even if it is flexible? There are simply other designs that are slimmer and allow for more breathing room.

I always wonder whether DIY modifications on Besta really make much difference.I can understand that doubt, but from my experience, the feeling of customizing the space according to your own needs is very rewarding. Especially when you want to feel comfortable in a small bedroom, it’s not just about the appearance, but also the habit of arranging furniture in a way that truly fits you.

Are there functional additions (like doors, inserts, or specific shelf dividers) that make using the bedroom more enjoyable? Here, I would recommend using inserts and boxes that can be flexibly slid into the Besta frames. This way, you can store various items, from clothing to small accessories, without everything getting mixed up. Doors, especially those with built-in mirrors, can also save space and make the room feel larger.
And: It should also be a place to retreat. If the furniture feels too labyrinthine, comfort suffers. That’s why I find a mix of closed and open sections ideal.
It’s important not to limit yourself too much by standard guidelines and to ask yourself: What functions do I need daily, and what could I reduce?
Hey Phillipro,
your topic really resonates with me! Last year, I completely remodeled my small bedroom using Besta units, and I can only recommend: be brave and experiment!
I stacked my Besta modules vertically, installed small compartments with baskets, and partly added sliding doors – this really saves space while keeping everything organized. I also removed some shelves and instead installed hook rails for bags and cloths. This improves airflow and makes everything more accessible.
That’s incredibly valuable advice. Incorporating mirrors is a great idea for small rooms!
And I’ll tell you: with these kinds of modifications, the bedroom really comes alive! Don’t get discouraged, try out different combinations—it’s even fun, and you quickly figure out what works best. 👍
