Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Brimnes wardrobe that I generally like, but I feel it sometimes seems a bit unstable, especially when you close the doors somewhat forcefully or hang items on the shelves. I would like to make the wardrobe more stable without completely rebuilding it or making unsightly modifications. Are there any proven, simple methods or reliable tips to improve the stability of this model? I am particularly interested in things like additional reinforcements, screw techniques, or suitable materials that can be added. Perhaps there are also general considerations for positioning or securing the unit to prevent wobbling permanently.

I look forward to your experiences and recommendations!

For additional information:

The Brimnes cabinet uses standard fasteners (dowels, flat brackets, screws) with a medium component thickness. The structural rigidity is limited by the thin back panels and the load applied on both sides of the boards.

To specifically improve stability, I recommend:

- Replacing the back panels with 6 mm (1/4 inch) plywood sheets, fastened with at least M4 screws spaced 15–20 cm (6–8 inches) apart.

- Installing additional metal brackets on the inside to create right-angle reinforcements. Pay attention to their position to avoid obstructing any functional elements.

- Using special furniture brackets with reinforcement ribs significantly increases torsional stiffness.

- Questions for Quintin: Is there any unevenness in the floor? What load (kg) is applied to the shelves and doors?

I can provide further reinforcement details based on these points.

Very important question!

Often, the stability aspect is overlooked regarding how the cabinet stands and is loaded. If you have shelves with heavy contents, the force distribution can change and cause more twisting.

Level the cabinet: Check with a spirit level if the cabinet is standing straight.

This is really the most crucial point. A misaligned base often causes more wobbling than missing reinforcements.

For everyone adding extra reinforcements: Please note that screws should not be placed too close to the edge, or the material may split. A distance of 3–4 cm (1–1.5 inches) is ideal.

Quintin, if you like, please describe your current load (e.g., books, binders, clothing) and the exact installation situation. That will help with recommendations.

Hey Quintin!

I also reinforced my Brimnes, and I can only say: with a few simple adjustments, the wardrobe is rock solid!

My key tips:
- Don’t forget to secure it to the wall, otherwise it will definitely wobble!
- I bought small anti-slip pads for the feet to prevent it from sliding.
- I slightly strengthened the back panel—not with plywood, but with thin wooden strips screwed on the inside.

You’ve got this! Just take it step by step, and you’ll have far fewer worries with the wardrobe.
