Hello everyone, I’m looking for practical tips and recommendations on how to make my IKEA Billy shelves childproof. The shelves are in our living room, which is frequently used by our two toddlers. My main concerns are preventing the shelves from tipping over, stopping heavy items from being pulled down easily, and protecting the edges to prevent injuries. Are there proven methods for installing anti-tip devices, corner guards, or advice on optimal shelf organization to make the unit safer? Which products or DIY solutions are practical and reliable? Thanks for your informed suggestions!

For secure anchoring of the BILLY bookshelf, I recommend using metal brackets that can be installed both at the top and bottom. Most IKEA mounting kits are designed for the top only, but it is easy to add your own brackets below as well. It is important that the wall is suitable (solid wall or load-bearing surface).

For particularly discreet solutions, small white metal brackets are suitable, which can be easily painted over after installation. There are also special anti-tip devices for furniture that wedge between the shelf and the floor, but these are not always ideal for households with children, as they can slip. Wall mounting remains the safest method.

Buy simple plastic corner protectors, which you can cut and stick yourself. Cheap and effective.

Magnetic catches on cabinet doors also help. This way, children cannot easily open the contents.

The combination of mechanical fastening and content control is essential. Wall mounting with the appropriate anchors is the most important aspect.

Do you know suitable mounting systems for BILLY shelves that are easy to install and not too visible?

I recommend using the original IKEA mounting kits supplemented with small additional brackets from a hardware store. Make sure to choose these mounting parts in colors that match the shelf, as this significantly improves the appearance.

It is also important that the shelves stand on a level floor and do not wobble – if necessary, compensate with small shims.

Additionally, cable ties or tension straps can be used to secure loose items.

Install the wall mount, protect corners, place heavy items at the bottom, and store important things out of reach. That is all you need.
