Hello everyone,
I am looking for ways to make IKEA Malm dressers child-friendly and at the same time very stable. Specifically, I want to prevent the dresser from tipping over during careless use or having sharp edges that could be dangerous for children. Additionally, it would be great if the dresser is sturdy enough to withstand some extra stress – for example, if kids climb on it or hold onto it.

I have already considered wall anchoring and edge protection but am not familiar with the best materials or installation methods to make the dresser truly safe and stable for children. Does anyone have experience with optimizing such furniture for children’s rooms? Maybe also tips for regular checks or maintenance? Thanks for your ideas!

Hey, this is how I did it: I attached my Malm dresser to the wall structure using angle brackets, which provides really strong support. I put corner protectors on and always keep the lower drawers well loaded – that prevents it from slipping. And yes, check from time to time to make sure everything is still secure. My kids still love to balance on the dresser, but the piece holds up! 🙂

I recommend securing the dresser to the wall using the provided wall anchors, applying edge protection to all sharp edges, placing heavy items at the bottom, and avoiding any loose accessories that children could swallow.

If you want to reinforce the dresser a bit more, you can screw sturdy plywood panels to the back

That’s a good idea! It will make the dresser more resistant to tipping. I would also recommend securing the screws well to prevent them from loosening. Otherwise, just make sure to check regularly—kids’ rooms are rarely quiet zones. 😉
