Hello everyone, I am planning to install IKEA Platsa furniture in the children's room and want to make absolutely sure that the furniture is truly child-safe. My main concerns are preventing dangerous tipping hazards, securing sharp edges, and generally minimizing the risk of injury for small children.

Does anyone know of effective methods or accessories to make Platsa as safe as possible for kids? I have already heard about wall attachments and edge protectors but am unsure what is especially useful for Platsa and whether there are other important points to consider, such as the load capacity of the doors, child locks for drawers, or similar measures.

I would really appreciate any helpful experiences, tips, or assembly instructions!

Good morning, I would like to address your question in detail because although Platsa is a flexible system, it does have some critical safety concerns, especially regarding use by children.

First, the main hazards: the risk of cabinets tipping over and the possibility of fingers getting caught or pinched by doors and drawers. IKEA generally provides wall mounting hardware, but this is mainly intended for stability and not specifically childproofing. Therefore, I recommend the following steps:

- Always mount the furniture to walls using appropriate anchors and hooks that are designed for solid walls; never rely solely on drywall anchors.
- Add edge protectors made of soft materials (silicone or foam) to the edges of both the exterior and interior parts of the furniture.
- Use child safety locks for drawers and doors, such as clamp or latch mechanisms that can be easily retrofitted (IKEA also offers child safety products).
- Also check that the shelves are properly loaded and use screws to secure them in place to prevent slipping.

I am curious about the ages of your children and whether they are already very physically active, as this significantly affects the risk level.

Thank you for your detailed response! My daughter is 3 years old, very curious, and already likes to climb on furniture. That’s why securing the furniture to the wall is especially important to me. I have been considering whether to reinforce the assembly of the Platsa furniture with a back panel, as I have read that this further improves stability.

Regarding the question about the back panel, I can address that as it is indeed an important topic for modular systems like Platsa.

The back panel not only provides stability but also prevents lateral stress caused by children playing, which could lead to tipping movements. If you only assemble the basic structure (side panels and shelves), the furniture becomes much more flexible and susceptible to twisting, especially when children pull or climb on it.

In practice, I recommend installing the back panel completely and carefully, and additionally checking the screws multiple times. Also, make sure that the lower plinth or feet stand firmly and evenly.

Furthermore, as already mentioned: wall anchors or brackets are essential. Ideally, use specially designed furniture brackets with child safety features that not only prevent free movement but are also strong enough to hold securely even under rough pulling or tipping.

Finally, closing the doors and drawers: effective solutions are magnetic locks or latch catches that prevent curious children from opening everything. If you like, I can provide a list of products that I have had good experiences with.

As an additional point, here is a focus on the risk of injury from sharp edges and corners:

- The edges of Platsa furniture are usually rounded, but injuries can still occur during active use. A special edge protector made of silicone or soft plastic that can be attached is recommended. These effectively protect the head, arms, and hands.
- The door hinges on Platsa units are quite sturdy, but can be enhanced with a soft-close door damper set to prevent doors from slamming and fingers from being pinched.
- Drawer systems with a soft-close feature also help prevent crushing injuries.

From personal experience, I have found that the combination of wall mounting, guides for doors and drawers, and edge protection is the most effective.

I am happy to compile a list of items and accessories if desired.

Always use wall anchors.

Buy childproof locks for drawers.

Install edge protectors on sharp corners.

This is usually sufficient for safety.
