Hello everyone, I am currently setting up a children's room and have chosen Ikea Platsa furniture because it is flexible and space-saving. However, I am concerned about safety, especially how to make these pieces as safe as possible for a small child. Some of the modules are quite tall, and there are adjustable shelves as well as cabinet doors, which can pose some risk of injury.

I would also like to know the correct way to secure the furniture to the wall, whether there are special anti-tip devices available, and if there are additional measures I should take to ensure the room is truly safe. Are there any experiences or tips that go beyond the usual corner brackets? Thank you in advance for your help!

I would advise you to always secure the PLATSA cabinets to the wall using the supplied wall anchors. This is the most important step to prevent tipping. Additionally, I recommend child safety locks for the doors, such as simple plastic latches, to prevent children from pinching their fingers.

You asked the question well and highlighted the most important points. Regarding wall mounting: make sure to use anchors that are suitable for the type of wall surface. For rigid walls such as concrete or brick, standard anchors are sufficient; for drywall (plasterboard) walls, special hollow wall anchors should be used. Besides the risk of tipping, an insecurely mounted cabinet also poses the danger of falling modules or doors. Therefore, each unit must be fixed individually. Additionally, anti-tip straps, usually metal bands with screws that are attached between the furniture and the wall, provide extra safety. In general, it is important to ensure that no sharp edges are exposed to children. Rounded edge protectors are helpful in this regard.

That is certainly a solid starting point, but I think the risk is often underestimated when children start pulling on drawers or climbing on cabinets. Ikea PLATSA doesn’t always seem as sturdy as it ideally should be. Therefore, I would be cautious about simply screwing the modules in place.

An additional option would be free-standing furniture anchors that connect the unit to heavy bases or even floor mounting. It takes more effort but is much safer. And honestly, wouldn’t it make sense for Ikea to offer more sustainable solutions for children’s room furniture? Safety aspects are especially important here.

I think it’s great that you’re addressing this topic critically, because that extra attention to safety is really important! 😊

I’ve installed PLATSA in our children’s room myself and also use flexible edge protectors and corner guards that are easy to apply. Additionally, I fitted almost all the doors with soft-close dampers, which eliminate loud noises and greatly reduce the risk of fingers getting caught. Of course, proper installation and making sure all screws are tightly secured are essential. If you keep that in mind, PLATSA is really enjoyable to use and the children’s room is well protected!

So: Don’t get discouraged—just remember to add the necessary safety features. It’s doable and makes all the difference!
