Hello forum,

some time ago, I purchased the IKEA PLATSA wardrobe with doors and am generally satisfied with the quality. However, I have noticed that the doors close quite loudly and with rattling, which can be especially disturbing during quiet moments or at night.

My question to you is: How can I make the IKEA PLATSA doors close more quietly? Are there proven methods or accessories such as special dampers, hinges, or rubber buffers that work well? I would prefer not to replace the entire doors or undertake major modifications, but rather a simple and lasting solution that is compatible with the existing mounting points.

I would be very grateful for tips, experiences, or advice on possible installation issues.

Best regards,

In addition to the options already mentioned, I would like to suggest a systematic approach:

- First, check whether the hinges are correctly installed and securely tightened. Loose screws can cause vibrations and noise.
- Adjust the door: Most Platsa hinges offer 3D adjustment (height, inward/outward, and lateral). A slight adjustment can improve the closing angle.
- Apply self-adhesive rubber or silicone buffers with about 2 mm (0.08 inches) thickness at the contact points. It is best to place them at several points at the top and bottom to achieve even cushioning.
- For a more permanent and very quiet closing, consider retrofit soft-close mechanisms from third-party suppliers. However, these are not officially approved by IKEA for PLATSA and usually require modification and additional drilling.

In general, rubber buffers are the simplest and least problematic solution, offering a good compromise between effort and result.

If you prefer a semi-professional solution, you can also look at the mechanism used in Blum hinges, which include factory-installed soft-close. These can be installed as replacements, provided the cabinet construction allows it. However, this would be a more extensive modification.

Regarding thickness: 2 mm (0.08 inches) is optimal; thicker buffers change the closing function too much, and thinner ones do not provide sufficient cushioning.

I had the same issue with my PLATSA cabinet and found it quite effective to stick small foam rubber buffers (about 2 mm) to the inside of the door at the top and bottom. This significantly softens the impact when closing.

When adjusting the hinges, I made the closing action a bit gentler by slightly loosening the screws so the door doesn’t slam tightly against the cabinet frame.

Combining these steps results in a noticeable reduction in noise with minimal effort.

If anyone can provide more details about the soft-close retrofit, that would be interesting, but I think I’ll start by trying the soft-close rubber buffers first.

Retrofitting soft-close is technically possible, but PLATSA is not originally designed for it, so it is often quite complex. Usually, you need special adapters, different hinges, and possibly drilling into the cabinet carcass. The rubber buffers are the quick and simple solution that usually works well enough.

If you are handy and enjoy DIY projects, you can try soft-close dampers from Blum or Hettich. These typically use a spring-based damping system that prevents the door from slamming shut.
