Hello everyone,
I plan to install an Ikea PAX wardrobe in our children’s room to keep clothes and toys organized. An important question for me is: how can I make these Ikea PAX wardrobes childproof so that young children cannot open the doors uncontrollably or injure themselves inside?
I am especially interested in practical solutions and proven methods that are easy to implement without completely refitting or altering the wardrobe. Are there specific child safety locks that work well with the PAX doors? How do you handle tipping protection, since these wardrobes are quite tall and heavy?
It would also be helpful to know if certain materials or interior fittings inside the wardrobe reduce the risk of injury and whether it makes sense to avoid certain parts to increase safety.
I look forward to your experiences and tips!

Hey Kejufe,
first of all: Good idea to emphasize safety – especially with PAX wardrobe systems, that’s really important. 😅
To childproof the doors, you can use special child safety locks made of plastic or metal that fit precisely on the PAX handles. These prevent the doors from opening easily. I also strongly recommend securing the wardrobes to the wall – otherwise, things can quickly go wrong if little ones pull on them energetically.
For tip-over protection, I attached a few metal brackets that firmly anchor the wardrobe to the wall. Another good tip: arrange the interior so that heavy items are stored at the bottom, which lowers the center of gravity.
It may sound like a lot of effort at first, but with a few tricks everything stays colorful and safe! Good luck with it!

Additional advice: When creating a child-safe environment around Ikea PAX wardrobes, I recommend the following proven measures:
- Install child safety locks designed specifically for wardrobes with hinged doors to effectively restrict access for young children.
- Use wall anchors: PAX wardrobes must always be secured to the wall brackets to prevent tipping.
- Arrange the interior so that heavy items are stored at the bottom, minimizing the risk of children pulling them out and injuring themselves when opening the doors.
- Edges and corners can be further protected with corner guards or bumpers to reduce the risk of injury from accidental bumps.
These measures ensure that the wardrobe is stable and safe. Additionally, check which accessories are available from the manufacturer for the PAX system, as these are often designed with safety in mind.

So, to make the doors childproof, you can use special child safety locks made of plastic or metal that fit precisely on the PAX handles.I would like to follow up on this: Do you know if these locks are really durable? Simple plastic locks are often easily bypassed by children or break after frequent use.
Additionally, it is important to consider whether child safety locks on the cabinet doors alone are sufficient if the cabinet is not anchored to the wall.
A fully childproof cabinet is only guaranteed when both tipping hazards and access are prevented. Therefore, combined solutions should be used, and quality should be prioritized, not just the appearance of the lock. It is worth checking the load ratings of the products and reading user reviews.

I myself use a combination of metal child safety locks and wall anchors for our cabinets, and so far I haven’t had any durability issues. I also used to think the cheaper plastic locks were fragile, but the more robust metal versions are actually very strong and provide good protection.
However, it is important to regularly check the locks, especially as children get older and stronger. In my opinion, wall mounting is the most important safety factor, as it clearly reduces the risk of tipping over.
Especially with Ikea products, it’s worth always looking at the original accessory options, as they perform better in load tests compared to no-name alternatives.
