Hello everyone, I am planning to design our Ikea Metod kitchen cabinets to be as child-friendly as possible. Specifically, I am looking for ways to make the cabinets safer for young children who are still exploring a lot and like to pull on doors and drawers. Are there any special measures or accessories to childproof Metod cabinets without losing too much convenience for adults? I am also interested to know if anyone has experience with particular materials or special fittings that make the cabinets more durable or more accessible for children, without compromising functionality. Thanks for all tips and experiences!
Hey! I think it’s okay to have a little fun with this 🙂. Using small colorful handles for the drawers can already help capture the kids’ interest – and maybe they’ll choose the ones you want them to have access to! For safety, we always used these magnetic child locks because they are easy to operate but keep little fingers out. Oh, and rounded edges on the Metod cabinets are definitely worth it – here we added silicone edge protectors, which look fun and provide protection.
Hello JOEDAN, to answer your question in more detail: The Ikea Metod cabinets are quite flexible when it comes to adding child safety features. Regarding safety, I recommend the following points: - Install child locks that adults can easily open as well, such as magnetic locks - Use non-slip edge and corner protectors, especially if the cabinets are in areas with a lot of movement - You can equip drawers with stoppers to prevent them from being pulled out too far - Make sure heavy items are stored low and out of children’s reach
About materials: There are special films available to protect surfaces from scratches and fingerprints – this makes the cabinets more durable against “kid adventures.” Functionality is hardly affected. I’m happy to share more practical tips if you like.

For children, it makes sense to place frequently used objects at a low height in lockable containers. This reduces the temptation to pull everything out and lowers the risk of accidents. Additionally, I recommend high-quality child safety locks that are firmly mounted, rather than adhesive strips, as these can come loose quickly.
Wow, I really like this topic! Metod is incredibly versatile, and if you get a bit creative, it can turn out great for the kids. A tip from me: use colorful storage boxes in the drawers to make tidying up more fun. And one more thing: don’t block the doors completely; instead, use magnetic locks so you can open them easily while still keeping the kids safe! You’ve got this!
