I’m looking for ways to make the popular IKEA Billy shelves more durable in the long term. The shelves are in a frequently used home office, and I want to prevent the panels from warping or wearing out due to moisture, load, or constant rearranging. I’m particularly interested in efficient methods to increase stability, protect surfaces, or possibly retrofit sturdy components without completely changing the original design.
Do you have experience with additional reinforcements, special coatings, or maintenance products? Or maybe tips on how to assemble the shelves correctly or fix them to the wall to ensure they remain stable over time?

You can also screw simple metal brackets underneath the shelves for reinforcement.Exactly! The brackets are small heroes and hardly visible. 😉 My shelf has held up great for years after I did that.
One more tip: If you fill shelves with heavy books, distribute the weight evenly from the start to reduce stress on individual points.

Speaking from my own experience: it’s definitely worth properly securing the shelves to the wall and then applying a clear varnish for great protection!
