Hello everyone, I want to make my BILLY shelves childproof because my young daughter is spending more time in our living area, and I’m concerned that she might get hurt on the shelves or that the shelves could tip over. My main questions are: What specific steps can I take to improve the stability of the shelves? How can I cover sharp edges or corners in a child-friendly way without altering their appearance too much? Are there any proven materials that are especially suitable for this? Maybe you also have personal experiences or special tips that go beyond the usual advice, such as attaching anti-tip brackets or using child-safe coverings. Thanks in advance for your support!
Hello Cirogu,
First of all, I think it’s great that you are concerned about your little one’s safety. That’s really important and often underestimated.
Regarding stability: the best way is to secure the BILLY shelves to the wall using brackets or corner braces. This reliably prevents tipping, even if your daughter pulls on them or climbs up.
For sharp edges, I recommend special edge protectors made of flexible plastic or soft silicone. These usually come in neutral colors or transparent, so they are hardly noticeable. It is also a good idea to cover the shelves with child-friendly covers or felt pads in case toys fall.
Materials like foam rubber or sponge provide good protection when cut to size. I have had good experience with transparent edge guards because they barely affect the look and hold well.
One more tip: avoid overloading the shelf to keep it stable. If the shelf is near the play area, I also recommend using a floor protector to prevent it from sliding.
If you like, I can also write you a step-by-step guide on how to modify the shelf properly. Just let me know if you are interested!

The best way is to secure the BILLY shelves to the wall using brackets or clamps. This is indeed the most important point when childproofing BILLY shelves. However, I’d like to go into more detail here because it’s the small things that often get overlooked:
1. Wall Mounting: Always use sturdy metal brackets to attach the shelves to the wall, securing them with at least two screws both into the shelf frame and the wall. Make sure the wall anchors are suitable for your wall type (e.g., hollow wall anchors for drywall or toggle bolts, or expansion anchors for concrete). Using only one screw or cheap fasteners can still allow the shelf to tip dangerously.
2. Shelf Selection and Load: Sometimes the smaller BILLY wall shelves are sufficient, as they are less top-heavy. Large shelves should be carefully loaded with maximum weight at the bottom to distribute the load as low as possible and keep it heavy.
3. Edge and Corner Protection: In addition to silicone or plastic profiles, I recommend self-adhesive foam edge protectors that can be easily cut to size. These can also be covered with fabric to both improve appearance and increase protection.
4. Screws and Mounting Safety: Regularly check the screws—especially for shelves in children’s rooms, where vibrations and impacts are common.
5. Non-Slip Mats or Felt Pads: If the shelf is on a smooth floor, these mats provide extra protection against sliding.
6. Use of Special Shelving Boards with Recesses or Screw Compartments to prevent children from pulling the shelves out.
I’m curious whether you plan to modify the shelf in the area you mentioned yourself, or if you’re aiming for a custom-built solution? Also, knowing the type of flooring and wall material would help for more precise advice.

What specific steps can I take to improve the stability of the shelves? How can I cover sharp edges or corners in a child-friendly way without significantly changing their appearance?I would like to add that it also makes sense to equip the shelves with anti-tip devices, which are available specifically for IKEA furniture. These usually consist of steel cable or strap combinations that you simply screw into the wall and the shelf.
You can easily cover sharp edges with self-adhesive foam strips, which are thin, flexible, and hardly noticeable to children. If you want to enhance the appearance a bit, there are also colored edge protectors made of wood that you can install yourself.
Lastly, I recommend placing non-slip pads under or behind the feet of the shelf to minimize shifting on smooth floors.
When installing, pay special attention to the correct height: the higher the shelves, the more important secure fixing becomes. And if you ever need to adjust the screws, always slightly relieve the shelf first.
I hope this helps – feel free to ask if you have any questions!
