Hello everyone, I am planning to integrate an Ikea Besta shelving unit as a central piece of furniture in my living space. I am wondering how to design and arrange the Besta system so that it is not only functional but also creates a cozy atmosphere. Specifically, I am interested in ideas for making the furniture look more homely, how to add practical elements, and if anyone has experience combining different materials and decorations with the Besta. I want to avoid it looking boring or too sterile, as I plan to use the shelving for storage of books, decor, and electronics. Looking forward to your tips and suggestions!
The concept of coziness is often subjective, so it’s great that you want to customize the shelf to your liking. I personally had trouble making the Besta feel homely at first because it is very simple. One small idea that helped me was arranging wooden picture frames and small decorative plates on the top and placing warm string lights all around. This added life to the corners and made me feel more comfortable right away. It sounds simple, but it’s these kinds of touches that create that "homey feeling."

I think that’s a nice idea because it doesn’t enclose the system but rather complements it – especially the string lights, which I’m considering as well. How did you secure them so the string lights don’t constantly slip or the visible cables don’t cause issues? I’d prefer not to drill too firmly.
