Hello everyone,

I am planning to install a kitchen in my attic using Ikea Metod cabinets, but the sloping ceiling is a concern since the standard cabinet dimensions don’t fit directly. My question is how to install Metod cabinets precisely under sloped ceilings.

Are there any proven methods or tips for adapting the cabinets to the angled wall without creating large gaps or needing extensive custom modifications? I’m especially interested in solutions that don’t require fully custom-made cabinets. Additionally, I would like to know how others optimize the space under the roof slope, particularly regarding storage capacity and ease of use.

Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

Hello,

measure the slope precisely and cut a trim strip at an angle to be screwed onto the cabinet.

Alternatively, small filler pieces made of wood or MDF can be adjusted to close the gaps.

This way, everything looks neat without having to modify the cabinets.

Hello edizno,

Regarding your question about how to fit Ikea Metod cabinets precisely under sloped ceilings, there are several effective approaches that can help.

1. Measuring: It is crucial to measure the slope accurately—ideally at multiple points and different heights, since the angle is often not perfectly uniform.

2. Cabinet width and layout: Choose cabinets with the modular Metod widths (60, 40, 80 cm (24, 16, 31 inches), etc.) to minimize waste and fitting issues.

3. Cutting cover panels: The filler panels or cover boards Ikea offers as accessories can be cut to size—using MDF or wooden panels from a hardware store that can be cut to your measurements to cover the sloped ceiling area.

4. Angled cuts on fronts or shelves: If you have DIY skills, you can also miter or angle-cut the top edges of the cabinet interiors or shelves to maximize space utilization.

5. Using filler pieces: These help close unwanted gaps and create a neat transition between the cabinet and the sloped ceiling.

6. Custom solutions: Another tip is to adapt base cabinets with countertops to the slope, and install upper cabinets only up to the lower edge of the ceiling slope. This avoids wasting space or needing complicated adjustments.

Important tip: Use a flexible installation process and assemble the cabinets partially at first to check their positioning before applying the final finish. This saves rework if the slope is uneven.

Summary: Precise measuring, working with appropriate filler pieces, and possibly angled-cut cover panels are key. I would advise against excessive custom fabrication to stay flexible.

I hope these detailed tips help you!

That is really the crucial point! Without exact measurements, there is a risk that the adjustments won’t fit properly. I recommend using a level and an angle finder to determine the exact pitch.

I can only agree here—especially if you plan to cut at an angle or add filler pieces, you should assemble the individual parts as a trial beforehand.

It would also be helpful to check in advance at Ikea or similar suppliers about suitable trims and filler pieces, as they often offer standard covers that you can use as a base.

If you’re somewhat uncertain with your DIY skills, it’s better to get a helper or professional support. With roof slopes, precise work is essential to avoid gaps or instability later on.

Many manage it well with some patience and the right materials. Good luck!

Hi edizno,

very exciting project! The method works great if you can be flexible with the cabinets. Here are a few practical tips:

- Use the top row of cabinets mainly for items you rarely need, so you have some leeway during installation with the exact slope.
- If you use filler pieces, paint them the same color as the sloped cabinets; this looks very high-end and makes the adjustments hardly noticeable.
- Use small spacers during installation to compensate for any unevenness in the wall.

That’s exactly why so much planning before installation is invaluable!

Don’t get discouraged— with some patience and the right preparation, you’ll achieve your perfect storage space despite the sloped ceiling, and the result will truly surprise you! Good luck and definitely enjoy the process!
