Hello everyone, I have a question and hope to benefit from your experience: How can I securely fix my Ikea Billy bookcases in a rental apartment without drilling into the walls? Since I don’t want to leave holes in the walls, traditional wall plugs and screws are not an option for me. Of course, I want to install the bookcases firmly and safely, as they are quite tall and fully loaded, so that nothing can tip over. Does anyone have tips on how to secure Billy bookcases without drilling? Maybe solutions with tension systems, special stability methods, or other clever ideas? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

One more tip from personal experience: Pay attention to the material quality when buying tension rods for ceilings!

This is a very important point. Cheap metal rods or those made of plastic can bend or slip under load.

Additionally, look for rounded caps at both the floor and ceiling ends that distribute pressure evenly. Hard plastic or rubber pads prevent damage to the surfaces.

Even better if the tension system allows for readjustment in case the floor or ceiling slightly shifts or the shelf settles.

If you are considering a freestanding version with casters, as Rashadmeo mentioned, don’t forget that the brakes should be checked regularly since they operate under load.

Regarding stability: The weight of the items and the height of the shelves affect safety.

Exactly, I was also thinking about storing heavier books on the lower shelves and lighter decorative boxes on the upper ones.

Installation is relatively simple: You measure the ceiling height precisely, adjust the pole to the correct length, and then secure it firmly between floor and ceiling by twisting it.

Okay, that sounds doable and not too complicated.

Have you ever tried shelves on casters with brakes?

Thanks for the suggestion – that sounds flexible, but it’s less interesting for me because I want the shelf mainly as a fixed storage solution that won’t be moved. Still, great tip for others!

Alternative: Furnishing with heavy-duty shelving units that stand free and have a wider base. This prevents tipping without the need for drilling or tension systems. With Billy shelves, this is difficult without wall fixing.

Sure, but if Billy shelves are already there, it doesn't really make sense to replace them right away. Just attach suction cups with a tension system and that’s it :-)
