Hello everyone,

I am currently working with my IKEA BILLY bookcase and have a specific question: How can I effectively increase the load capacity of BILLY bookcases without compromising stability or appearance?

I have the 80x28x202 cm (31.5x11x79.5 inch) model, which I use for heavy books and decorations. The shelves tend to bend slightly under heavy loads, which makes me a bit concerned. Are there any special reinforcements that can be added afterward? Or does IKEA offer accessories that might not be widely known among users?

I would appreciate any advice, especially if it is practical and long-lasting. Thanks in advance!

I would like to add:

Many people overlook load distribution. If you have heavy books, it makes sense not to place them unevenly or only in certain spots. It’s better to spread them across several shelves and store the heaviest books on the bottom.

Use of alternative shelves: plywood or multiplex boards with higher load capacity

In my opinion, this is a very good and neat solution if you have some DIY skills. Multiplex boards are stronger and less flexible than the standard chipboard used in BILLY.

Also, small but sturdy supports along the back wall under the shelves work wonders. Sometimes it’s enough to simply wedge or screw thin wooden strips under the shelves from behind. This is hardly noticeable.

I hope these tips help you!

To improve the load-bearing capacity of your BILLY shelf without affecting its appearance, I recommend the following approach:

- Use thin stainless steel metal brackets, preferably attached to the inside of the shelves. This way, they are hardly visible from the outside.
- Alternatively, tongue and groove wooden strips can support the stability of the shelves without compromising the look.

Another possible solution is to replace the back panel with a sturdier wooden board. This can further reinforce the entire frame.

Which methods would be least noticeable without reducing the load capacity?

Metal brackets installed from the inside or wooden strips matched to the shelf color are probably the best combination of function and design here.

Insert additional shelves, install metal brackets, secure the shelf to the wall

I would agree with this. Often, it is enough to properly anchor the shelf and reinforce the shelves with brackets. For long-term stability, however, you should use high-quality brackets.

If you can place the shelf on the floor, do so on a level surface. Unevenness does not improve load capacity.
