Hello everyone, I have installed a few Ikea Metod drawers in my home, and I noticed that their movement isn’t always as smooth as I would like. Especially when they are fully loaded, opening and closing feels quite heavy, and sometimes they even stick slightly. I have considered whether the drawer slides might need adjustment or cleaning, but I’m unsure how to proceed without taking everything apart.

Therefore, my question to you is: How can I improve the movement of Ikea Metod drawers? What steps or actions really help to make the drawers glide more easily and smoothly? Do you also have any tips on which lubricants might be suitable, if lubrication is recommended at all? I would really appreciate detailed suggestions or your own experiences!

First, check if the drawer slides are clean and free of any debris that might cause blockage. Then lightly lubricate the slides, preferably with some silicone spray, which also helps protect against dust. Make sure nothing is misaligned – sometimes a small adjustment of the screws can make a big difference.

In general, I recommend removing the drawers completely from the cabinet to access the drawer slides properly. Here is a step-by-step guide that has worked well for my Metod drawers:

- Pull the drawer out completely, then release any metal clips (if installed) on the side rails to fully detach it.
- Clean the slides thoroughly to remove dust, lint, and other debris. A dry cloth or brush works best for this.
- Inspect the slides and rollers carefully for wear or bent parts. If damaged, the drawer slide should be replaced.
- For lubrication, I strongly recommend a silicone-based spray, as it doesn’t become sticky or attract dirt. Avoid oily lubricants, as these only cause more grime buildup.
- Reinstall the drawer, making sure everything is precisely back in place—especially the fastening of the slides with the screws. Even a small misalignment can make the drawer harder to slide.

If you want, you can also slightly loosen the screws holding the slides, push the drawer in gently, and then tighten the screws again. This allows everything to align perfectly.

Does this help? What specific problems are you currently experiencing with your drawer’s sliding action?

I agree, but honestly: Why does Ikea install these types of drawer runners in Metod that apparently start having problems after a short time? In my opinion, the design simply isn’t robust enough for everyday use, especially when the drawers are loaded a bit heavier.

That’s of course a good tip, but I still think many people reach for lubricants too quickly instead of considering the basic quality and installation first. I wonder if there aren’t better alternatives to Metod that don’t require such regular readjustments.

My suggestion to sonela: Take a close look to see if the runner is already bent or if the material is fatigued. Sometimes cleaning and lubricating just isn’t enough, and then you need to retrofit or replace.

I completely understand how frustrating it is when drawers don’t slide smoothly, especially if you need to use them every day. I went through the same thing a while ago and wasn’t sure at first how to tackle the problem.

What helped me was thoroughly cleaning the drawer slides, but most importantly, carefully adjusting the screws, as has already been suggested. You really notice that even a half millimeter difference can have a big impact. And yes, sometimes it takes patience and several attempts.

If you like, I can share some tips on how to proceed gently to avoid any damage. Also, if it’s bothering you, don’t hesitate to ask more questions here—we’re all here to find solutions together.
