Hello everyone,
I’m looking for tips and tricks to improve the overall operation of my IKEA Malm drawers. Specifically, the problem is that the drawers sometimes feel a bit stiff or do not open and close smoothly. I have already cleaned the runners superficially, but I don’t think that’s the only cause.
I’m especially interested in practical and long-lasting solutions, preferably without expensive replacement parts, that can be implemented quickly. Does anyone have experience with lubricants, adjustment options, or other modifications? Any advice on proper maintenance or common issues that are easy to overlook would also be great.
Thanks for your support!

How about the adjustment? Is there an easy way to check if the drawer is properly aligned?Hello joseph42,
yes, that is an important question! Simply put, you should completely empty the drawer and carefully observe whether it moves crookedly or sticks anywhere when opening. Use your hand to apply slight sideways pressure when pulling: if this makes the pull easier, there may be a minor misalignment.
Some models allow adjustment of the runners either through small screws on the sides or by loosening and repositioning the retaining tabs on the drawer itself. If this option is available, you can test aligning the drawer horizontally.
If your Malm drawers still have the classic wooden runner system, also make sure there are no deformations, as this can be the main cause of stiffness.
I would recommend proceeding step by step: first clean everything, then apply lubricant, and finally adjust. This way you can best determine which factor has the greatest effect.

If it sticks or binds to the left or right, the rails are usually not parallel or bent. Tighten the screws and, if necessary, adjust the runners – often just sliding them slightly is enough.
