Hello everyone,
I’m looking for tips and tricks to improve the overall operation of my IKEA Malm drawers. Specifically, the problem is that the drawers sometimes feel a bit stiff or do not open and close smoothly. I have already cleaned the runners superficially, but I don’t think that’s the only cause.
I’m especially interested in practical and long-lasting solutions, preferably without expensive replacement parts, that can be implemented quickly. Does anyone have experience with lubricants, adjustment options, or other modifications? Any advice on proper maintenance or common issues that are easy to overlook would also be great.
Thanks for your support!

Hello joseph42,
I understand your concern well, as a stiff Malm drawer can be really frustrating in everyday use. Generally, the drawer slides are mostly self-cleaning, but residues, dust, or small wood chips can block the mechanism. Therefore, I recommend first removing the drawers completely and thoroughly wiping the metal or plastic glide rails with a dry cloth.
After that, lubricating with a suitable lubricant is a proven measure. Silicone spray is useful because it doesn’t clump and doesn’t attract dirt particles. Avoid greasy oils like WD-40, as they tend to attract dirt quickly.
Additionally, you should check if the drawer is properly aligned. Small adjustments to the mounting can make a big difference. Also, check the condition of the plastic rollers or glide tracks, as damage can cause the drawer to stick or jam.
If the drawer still pulls hard, gently lifting it while pulling or reducing any possible overload can help—Malm drawers are not designed to handle unlimited weight.
I hope these tips help you!

Hello joseph42,
to improve the operation of the Malm drawers, here is a simple step-by-step guide:
1. Remove the drawer completely: Pull the drawer all the way out and lift it slightly to disengage it from the slides.
2. Cleaning: Use a dry, lint-free cloth to remove dust and dirt from the slides, including the inside of the drawer itself.
3. Apply lubricant: Use a light silicone spray and apply it only to the moving parts of the slide rails. Important: Do not use oil as it attracts dirt.
4. Check the rollers or runners: Inspect for any damaged or bent plastic parts. Replace if necessary.
5. Check adjustment: Some Malm models have small adjustment screws on the slides. Make sure the drawer fits well and does not tilt.
6. Reinstall: Carefully put the drawer back in and test the movement by opening and closing it several times.
7. Reduce weight: Overloaded drawers often do not operate smoothly.
Special tip: If the movement is still not smooth after all this, gently sanding or smoothing the runners may help—but be careful not to remove too much material.
Good luck!

Wow, great topic! My Malm drawers also used to get stuck from time to time – it feels like everything just catches and won’t move smoothly.
What really helped me was thoroughly cleaning them first with a vacuum and a microfiber cloth, then applying silicone spray. It’s really effective because it not only improves the sliding but also doesn’t leave any greasy residue. Just clean, spray, and you’re done! 🙂
And very important: I always made sure not to overload the drawer with too heavy items. That also makes a big difference!
I hope you give this a try – I’m sure it will make your life easier!!!

a thin silicone spray [...] Important: Do not use oil, as it attracts dirt.Thank you very much for the detailed instructions! The advice about the silicone spray and avoiding oil makes a lot of sense to me—I initially used an all-purpose maintenance spray, which apparently had the opposite effect.

Just wash, spray, done! 🙂That sounds very straightforward; I’ll definitely use a vacuum cleaner and microfiber cloth. Thanks also for the tip regarding the weight limit.
What about the adjustment? Is there an easy way to check if the drawer is properly aligned? I tried roughly, but couldn’t notice any real effect.
