EMANUEL5911 Sep 2018 08:37Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into how to best design my home office to improve both organization and efficiency. I keep coming across the Ikea Besta system, which I generally find very practical—especially because of its modular construction and the many design options it offers. However, there are a few areas where I see room for improvement, particularly regarding office organization.
I am therefore interested in: How can I improve Ikea Besta for office organization? Specifically, what useful additions, modifications, or accessories would you recommend to better structure the drawers and compartments? Are there any clever inserts or organizational aids that have proven particularly effective?
Experience-based insights on usability in daily work—such as accessibility, flexibility for changing needs, durability, and design suggestions—are also very welcome.
Looking forward to your tips and ideas!

A very interesting topic, EMANUEL59.
To optimize the Ikea BESTA system for office organization, it’s worthwhile to take a closer look at the interior organization of cabinets and drawers.
- Modular inserts made of wood or plastic, which can be precisely adjusted to the dimensions of the drawers, are very practical. This way, you can create separate sections for writing instruments, cables, or documents.
- I have had good experiences with stackable insert boxes; these allow you to make optimal use of the drawer depth without having to empty the entire compartment all the time.
- A clear advantage is placing frequently used items in the upper compartments for easy access, while less frequently needed items are stored below.
In addition, Ikea even offers separate storage sets for drawers that can be added. It is important to pay attention to the materials used to avoid excessive wear or slipping.
It is also essential to consider usage frequency from the start, so the items are not overloaded.
If you like, I can also provide tips on the arrangement and sensible grouping of office supplies.

I would add: a smart idea is to attach small labels or colored markers to the inserts. This helps you quickly find what you’re looking for and adds some color to what can sometimes be a rather sterile office environment.
Also, if like me you enjoy creative breaks and have craft supplies lying around, small boxes with different compartments can help keep things organized without feeling too rigid.
And honestly: who says the system is only for paperwork? Some of the compartments are perfect for keeping snacks or personal items handy—a bit of comfort definitely belongs in the workspace, right?
Regarding durability: mine holds up surprisingly well as long as you don’t stack too heavily and declutter regularly. And if you ever run out of space, the module can be easily expanded.
So overall: adding more color, flexible divisions, and a touch of lifestyle—that’s what makes the BESTA insert stand out in the office for me! 😉

How can I improve Ikea BESTA for office organization? Specifically: Which useful additions, modifications, or accessories do you recommend to better organize the drawers and compartments? This question touches on an interesting point since the BESTA system is generally flexible, but it does require some adjustments to work efficiently for office organization. I like to approach it step by step:
- Drawer organization: Invest in custom inserts, preferably made of sturdy plastic with an easy-to-clean surface. This prevents dirt buildup and makes it easier to keep things organized.
- Cable management: Since BESTA units don’t have built-in cable openings, I recommend adding small cable holes at the back of the modules. This can be done DIY or by using aftermarket accessories.
- Lighting: For better visibility at night or in dark corners, installing a slim LED strip light helps; many opt for USB-powered solutions here.
- Labeling: Durable, washable labels on the inserts provide clear organization, especially when multiple people access the office.
- Use of inner doors: The doors often offer unused space. Attaching magnetic boards, small hooks, or pen holders can maximize storage capacity.
Additionally, consider the load capacity of each BESTA component, especially if you store heavy binders or electronic devices inside. Regularly check the drawer slides to avoid warping.
With this, you have a solid foundation that you can refine to suit your needs. Regarding your specific use case—do you mainly store many small items or large documents? That will determine the best inserts.
