jepar37Hello everyone,
In my home office, I have several Ikea Platsa drawers that have recently started sticking when I try to pull them out or push them in. This mainly happens when the drawers are loaded with heavier items, but even when empty, the mechanism doesn’t seem to operate as smoothly as expected.
My question is: How can I repair Ikea Platsa drawers to prevent them from sticking? Specifically, I’m interested in common causes for this issue and simple or more involved steps I can take to make the drawers glide smoothly again.
It would be great if you could provide specific advice on the drawer slides, possible adjustments, lubricants, or even tools that have proven useful.
Thanks in advance for your support!

Hi jepar37,
I know the problem with Platsa drawers all too well – sometimes they really like to show their resistance. 😊 From my experience, it’s usually caused by small debris or trapped fibers on the drawer slides. Try vacuuming the slides first, then apply some silicone spray (please avoid WD-40, as it can damage plastic) and carefully pull the drawers fully out and push them back in a few times.
This often helps to loosen the mechanism quite effectively.
If the rails are slightly bent, a gentle adjustment with a small screwdriver can sometimes help. But be careful not to apply too much force, as the material is delicate.
Good luck and happy sliding! 😉

flo-Theres23 May 2024 11:22Hello jepar37,
In addition to mauka’s tips, I would recommend completely removing the drawers and thoroughly inspecting the runners. Often, not only dust but also fine sand or small particles accumulate in the guide areas, which can cause sticking.
The Platsa drawers use full-extension runners, which can also be purchased as spare parts at Ikea if, for example, plastic components break or become deformed.
For lubrication, a special plastic glide lubricant or Teflon spray is suitable, as these do not attract dirt.
Important: apply only a thin layer, otherwise it can have the opposite effect.
If a mechanical part no longer hooks in properly, it can cause sticking – in this case, tighten the screws or check the adjustment.

Nathanaelk23 May 2024 13:59Hello everyone,
I want to address this topic in great detail because there are some technical pitfalls that are often overlooked when repairing Platsa drawers.
First, regarding the cause: The jamming usually results from an imbalance in the drawer slides. The Platsa models use a plastic-metal combination with ball-bearing runner rails. These ball bearings require a clean running surface and must not be blocked.
My approach to these issues is always as follows:
- Completely remove the drawers to thoroughly inspect the slides from both sides.
- Check if the rails are properly aligned, inspect for any cracks or breaks in the plastic, and ensure the ball bearings move freely.
- Clean the ball-bearing runners with isopropyl alcohol or a lint-free cloth to remove old lubricant and dust residues.
- After cleaning, apply silicone-based lubricants, as these do not harden and do not attract dust.
It is important to note: WD-40 or oil-based lubricants are not suitable for plastic rails and can cause material damage over time.
Additionally, it helps to check the drawer mounting screws, as loose drawer clips can cause the slides to function imprecisely.
One more question for you, jepar37: Do you primarily use the drawers with heavy loads, or have the issues occurred regardless of the load? This could influence the type of adjustment or reinforcement needed.

Good question! Actually, the drawers are usually loaded with medium to heavy weight, mostly books and office supplies. However, the problems also occur when the drawers are completely empty or only lightly loaded. So the sticking is not solely load-dependent; it just tends to worsen with heavier loads.

Good morning,
Based on the information provided so far, the following steps are recommended to permanently fix the drawer sticking issue:
- Remove the drawers and thoroughly inspect the runners for any deformations
- Clean the runners with isopropanol or a similar solvent-free cleaner
- Apply a silicone-based lubricant specifically designed for plastic and metal combinations
- Tighten all screws on the drawer fronts and runners as needed
- Check if the drawer is properly aligned within the frame (angle and parallel guidance) and adjust if necessary
A coating of PTFE or similar material can provide additional smoothness.
If there are already mechanical defects such as cracks, these components should be replaced.
The combination of mechanical adjustment and proper lubrication is the most effective solution.
