Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA Metod countertop in my kitchen and would like to know how to effectively extend its lifespan.

I understand that these countertops are sturdy but not indestructible. I use it daily and have started to notice some minor wear and water marks along the edges. I have questions like: Which cleaning products are recommended? Should protective coatings (such as oil or sealants) be applied? What is the best way to handle moisture, heat, and scratches?

Perhaps some of you have practical tips or experiences beyond the general advice—especially from long-term use. I look forward to your responses, as durability is important to me and I want to avoid having to replace the countertop prematurely.

These are well-asked questions and head in the right direction.

I would initially be cautious about applying oil or sealants without knowing the material precisely. Ikea Metod countertops are often particleboard with decorative foil; these foils are not always designed for such treatments and might peel or swell if inappropriate products are used.

Regarding moisture: Wiping off water marks immediately is essential. Persistent moisture can cause swelling, and this is not up for debate.

About heat: Direct heat, such as from hot pots, should be avoided because the decoration is not heat-resistant enough. Scratches can sometimes be minimized, depending on the surface, with fine sandpaper or polish, but this mostly affects appearance rather than function significantly.

I recommend checking the exact manufacturer instructions rather than applying something randomly.

More important, in my opinion, is preventive care by:
- regularly and immediately removing dirt and liquids
- using cutting boards
- avoiding direct heat exposure on the surface

I would like to add the following: Ikea states that Metod countertops typically have a melamine resin coating, which is generally water- and heat-resistant. However:

- Avoid standing water on edge areas due to the construction
- Quickly wipe off any moisture, especially on rebate edges and corners
- Use coasters or protective pads for hot appliances (pots, coffee machines)

For cleaning, mild dish soap and a soft cloth are recommended. Avoid harsh cleaners, bleach, or abrasive materials, as they can damage the surface.

Additional sealing with oils is more suitable for solid wood countertops. Since Ikea countertops are often veneered or coated, oil can cause stains or uneven surfaces.

In short: protective measures depend on proper handling rather than applying extra layers.

Never let me down when I want low-maintenance material – Metod isn’t solid wood, so we are somewhat limited. Still:

- I use small trivets for cookware to prevent heat from directly contacting the countertop – simple and effective.
- Cutting boards are a must anyway, not only to protect the surface but also for hygiene.
- For cleaning, I use lukewarm water with a little dish soap, followed by a dry cloth.

I would strongly advise: please keep abrasive cleaners in the cupboard, they scratch the surface.

Is this too technical? No, just handle it gently and wipe it down occasionally, and it will stay nice longer. No need to stress – the countertop is not a piano. 😉

Cutting boards protect the countertop and prevent scratches. In addition: wipe up any liquids immediately and do not place hot pots directly on the surface.

In short: no oil, clean gently, wipe with a damp cloth, avoid heat.
