Hello everyone, I am currently considering the best way to flexibly expand the IKEA Platsa system. My living situation is likely to change in the coming months, so I am looking for a solution that allows me to grow or reconfigure the furniture modularly and easily. I am especially interested in options to extend the width and height, as well as possible combinations with other furniture or accessories to optimize storage space effectively. Does anyone have experience with planning PLATSA flexibly and expanding it later without having to start from scratch? Thanks for any helpful tips and warnings about potential pitfalls!

I have been using PLATSA myself for quite some time, and especially the ability to replace or add individual modules is what makes the system so flexible. Thanks for the information! I’m particularly interested in how easy it is to reconfigure in practice. Do you have to take apart all the components, or is it enough to simply detach and reattach individual modules? And does the whole structure remain stable after that? Are there any recommendations on the best tools to use for this kind of work?
For reconfiguration: The modules are connected with screws and brackets. You can relatively easily detach individual units using a Phillips screwdriver and, if necessary, a cordless drill. It is not necessary to disassemble all parts. Stability is maintained as long as all connection points are properly secured again.

Simply expand bit by bit, for example with additional doors or drawers – that’s really enjoyable!I take a pragmatic view, but it’s also important to consider that not every extension is automatically beneficial. Attaching modules arbitrarily can result in a less than optimal storage layout or load-bearing issues. Therefore, I believe it’s essential to carefully think about what is truly needed before making a purchase.

The maximum height and width of the PLATSA shelves should be considered during planning, as there are limits to their stability. This is a crucial point. Additionally, I recommend carefully reading the assembly instructions for PLATSA, as they contain important information about the maximum load capacity of the modules and the correct use of the connecting elements. This helps to avoid mistakes that could compromise stability.

Do you have to take all the parts apart, or is it enough to simply loosen and reattach individual modules? In my experience, the type of modification planned makes the difference: Small changes, such as adding a new module next to existing ones, usually only require loosening the side panels and inserting the connection sets. You don’t need to take everything apart completely. However, for larger alterations, it can be useful to remove individual components. Helpful tools include a cordless drill with adjustable torque, Phillips bits, and possibly a small hammer for the connection clips.
