Hello everyone, I am considering how to enhance my Ikea Hemnes furniture with suitable LED lighting. I am mainly thinking of creating a subtle indirect light source for my dressers and display cabinets that makes the wood glow warmly without causing glare or being too dominant when switched on. I want to keep the installation as discreet as possible, with no visible cables or unattractive fixtures that would detract from the charm of the Hemnes series. Are there tried-and-tested solutions with LED strips or perhaps individual spotlights that can be neatly mounted under or behind shelves? What technical requirements should I be aware of, for example regarding power supply and connection options? I am especially interested in how to integrate such lighting cleanly and safely without damaging the furniture. Any tips or experiences on this would be appreciated!

Hello PAAIREN, that’s a really great idea to illuminate Hemnes furniture with LED lights – it can look very stylish if done well. I did this myself some time ago with my display cabinet and can gladly recommend a detailed process:

- First, you should decide on the type of LEDs: Flexible LED strips are great because you can install them almost anywhere with ease. Choose warm white LEDs (between 2700K and 3000K) as they complement the wood color of Hemnes furniture very well.

- Next is the voltage issue: Most LED strips operate at 12 volts, so you will need a suitable power supply (converting 230V to 12V). Make sure to consider the length of the strips to ensure the power supply can handle the required load.

- Installation: I attached the LED strips directly to the underside of the shelves using double-sided tape. Some shelves have a groove that can be used as a cable channel, which creates a very neat appearance.

- Cable routing: Try to route the cables inside the furniture as much as possible. Ikea furniture often has openings at the back for back panels or drilled holes which you can use – it’s best to gently pre-drill small holes to pass the cables cleanly.

- Control: There are convenient remote controls for LED strips, some with dimming functions. This allows you to adjust the lighting depending on the mood.

Finally: Make sure to have safe wiring and avoid loose cables that could get pinched when sliding the furniture. If you describe more precisely which furniture pieces you want to illuminate, I can help create suitable material lists.

One more question: Do you want the lighting to be permanently connected to power (hardwired), or would you prefer a battery-operated solution?

That’s a really great tip! I personally love when furniture has a bit of a glow, and these warm LED modules or strips create a cozy atmosphere.

For my Hemnes cabinet, I integrated a solution with LED spotlights that can be simply inserted – the advantage being that you can replace the spots if needed. However, power supply can get tricky with such open setups, so always make sure to hide the cables neatly.

Another recommendation is LED strips with motion sensors. They turn on automatically when you open the door, creating a wow effect and being very practical—especially for display cabinets or dressers you open only occasionally. It really makes the interior stand out!

If you’re still looking for affordable kits, pay attention to good quality in the strips and waterproofing (IP20 or higher) if you have humidity in the room.

All in all: go for it, it’s really fun to do, and Hemnes furniture is a perfect candidate for a little DIY lighting.

I think the idea of equipping furniture with warm LED lights is wonderful. Especially if you spend a lot of time at home, such lighting creates a pleasant atmosphere and immediately makes the space feel more cozy.

However, I also understand the concern about potentially damaging something when drilling or gluing—after all, Hemnes wood isn’t infinitely durable.

Maybe it helps to take small steps: first test in a less visible spot which type of attachment holds best—I, for example, tried whether double-sided tape works on an inside edge or if small cable clips are better.

I also like the idea of pairing this kind of lighting with a remote control or switchable power strips so you can easily turn the lights on and off without having to look for cables or switches every time.

If you have other ideas on how to create a particularly elegant transition from furniture to lighting, I would be very happy to hear them!

To complement the previous contributions, here is a structured overview for the clean integration of LED lighting into Ikea Hemnes furniture:

- Selection of LED lighting: Flexible LED strips (12 V) with a warm white color temperature (2700–3000 Kelvin) provide a pleasant light tone that complements the wood finish.

- Power supply: External power supply suitable for the total length and power requirements; ideally a 12 V power supply with at least 20% reserve capacity.

- Installation: Use of adhesive tape, existing recesses, or aluminum profiles to mount the LEDs. Important: Clean, grease-free surfaces for good adhesion.

- Cable management: Use of back panel holes or modifications to the back panel to manage cables without visible wiring.

- Switch/control system: Installation of integrated push buttons in the furniture or wireless control (RF/IR/Smart Home) to ensure ergonomic access to the switch.

- Safety: Avoid cable clamps when moving the furniture, ensure adequate fuses in the circuit, and follow the manufacturer’s specifications regarding voltage and power of the LED modules.

Additionally, I recommend precise measurements of the furniture interior and planning the cable routing with sketches before installation. This helps prevent surprises during assembly.

If you have any questions about specific products, types of power supplies, or connection methods, I am happy to assist.
