TUDEO30Hello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a few pieces of furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series, which I generally like a lot. However, I miss the practical feature of soft-close drawers that I know from other furniture.
My question is: How can I equip IKEA Brimnes furniture with soft-close drawers?
I want to keep the existing drawers but would like to retrofit the soft-close function without completely replacing the drawer slides or significantly altering the furniture. Are there special retrofit kits for this, or can the existing slides be modified using certain techniques or materials?
It is also important to me that the solution is durable and that the mechanism does not fail after a few weeks.
Does anyone have experience with this or can offer helpful tips, maybe even recommendations for products or detailed installation instructions?
Thank you in advance!

To be honest, I find the idea of retrofitting IKEA Brimnes furniture with soft-close features somewhat pointless. These pieces are not designed for that, which can cause more problems than benefits.
Drawer slides are quite specifically designed, and soft-close mechanisms require a stable foundation. If the original system does not support this, you will either need significant modifications or constant adjustments. It would be better to choose a piece of furniture that includes this feature from the start.
But of course, if you are committed to the DIY furniture refinishing approach, it will be interesting to see who really has practical solutions here.

First, to answer your question: "How can I equip IKEA Brimnes furniture with soft-close drawers?" – this is generally possible, but you should pay attention to a few important details to achieve a good result.
The original Brimnes drawers run on simple roller slides or telescopic rails without damping. To retrofit soft-close functionality, you basically have two options:
- Replace the drawer slides with soft-close telescopic rails. This is the cleanest and most durable option. It is important that the new slides fit the existing drawer and cabinet dimensions exactly. Since Brimnes furniture is relatively small, you should carefully measure before purchasing new slides.
- Retrofit external soft-close dampers, which are usually mounted on the side of the slide or cabinet. These are less expensive but may fail more easily or slightly affect usability, depending on the installation and quality.
I recommend always checking the measurements and attachment points before buying and perhaps testing with a sample part to ensure everything fits. Also, keep in mind the load capacity of the drawer slides – the soft-close module can sometimes alter running behavior and load conditions.
If you want, I can provide a more detailed step-by-step guide depending on which option you choose. Feel free to ask: Which type of drawer slides do you have? Rollers or telescopic? That actually makes a difference for the conversion.

Soft-close mechanisms require a stable base. That is absolutely correct and, in my opinion, the most important point.
I would add that Brimnes furniture is relatively affordable and often made with slightly thinner materials. This means that when installing robust soft-close slides, the mounting points can tear out or deform if you are not very careful.

The options are limited, and I would generally advise against modifying the original slides—such experiments can quickly become frustrating and unreliable. Instead, I recommend replacing the slides completely if soft-close functionality is a must for you.
Alternatively, sometimes damping pads and self-adhesive silicone strips can achieve a slightly cushioned closing without replacing the mechanism entirely. While this doesn’t fully replicate soft-close, it’s a quick and cost-effective improvement.
Hopefully, this helps you assess whether retrofitting really makes sense for your situation or not.
Hello!
I would like to offer some practical advice based on my experience with IKEA furniture and retrofitting soft-close mechanisms.
The best way to equip the Brimnes series with soft-close functionality is to replace the existing drawer slides with so-called soft-close telescopic slides. These slides allow for a smooth closing action because they have an integrated damper.
I recommend the following steps:
- First, carefully measure the existing drawers and cabinet, especially the width, depth, and height of the drawer sides.
- Then, obtain suitable soft-close drawer slides; many suppliers claim compatibility with IKEA cabinets, typically ranging from 30cm to 40cm (12 inches to 16 inches) in length.
- Carefully remove the old drawer slides, making sure the screw holes are precisely positioned so that the new slides can be easily installed.
- Attach the new slides according to the installation instructions and reinstall the drawer.
- Finally, check whether the soft-close function works smoothly and, if necessary, slightly adjust the screws.
It is also important to check the weight capacity of the slides before purchase, especially for larger or heavier drawers.
If you do not want to replace the entire slide, there are so-called soft-close adapters that can be mounted on the existing slides. These are cheaper but do not always work perfectly and, in my experience, can reduce the lifespan of the furniture.
I hope this information helps you. If you have any questions about measuring or installation, I am happy to assist.
