Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit and want to protect my floor from potential damage as best as possible. Specifically, I’m looking for a suitable solution to attach felt pads under the unit. I’m particularly interested in advice on how to choose and install the right felt pads so that they hold securely over time and protect the floor from scratches and permanent marks. It would also be helpful if you have tips on cleaning and maintenance to preserve this protection. Are there any specific types or methods that have proven especially effective with Besta? Thank you in advance for your suggestions and experiences!

I would like to emphasize once again that glued joints are always critical, especially for furniture that is moved occasionally.

If the shelf is very heavy, felt pads with extra-strong adhesive or those that can be fixed with small screws can help.

That sounds reasonable, although I am concerned that screwing might be problematic with the thin shelves of the Besta system. Anyone planning to screw should first check the material thickness and construction to avoid damaging the furniture. Twisting or warping would be counterproductive.

For systematic implementation:

- Material: Use felt pads 3–6 mm (0.1–0.25 inches) thick with a strong, self-adhesive backing, designed specifically for furniture with flat feet.

- Preparation: Thoroughly clean the feet with isopropanol or a similar cleaner to remove dust, grease, and dirt.

- Installation: Press the pads firmly for several seconds. For heavy loads, felt pads with additional mechanical fasteners (e.g., nails or screws) are recommended if the furniture material allows.

- Maintenance: Check the pads every six months for damage and wear to continuously ensure floor protection.

Background:
Felt pads reduce point pressure and prevent scratches. With IKEA BESTA, which uses relatively lightweight engineered wood, caution is advised when using mechanical fasteners, as the material is not always solid wood.

I also use felt pads for my BESTA, but I have had good results with those from the hardware store that have an adhesive backing. Just stick them on and press firmly; they hold up very well with normal use. Check them every few months and replace them if needed.
