Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my Ikea BESTÅ shelving unit with castors to make it more flexible and mobile. However, I am still unsure which types of castors are compatible with the BESTÅ system and what to consider when choosing them. The shelving unit will mainly be used as a TV and media furniture piece, so it should be stable but also light enough to move when needed. How important are size, load capacity, and attachment method when selecting castors? Does Ikea offer specific castors for this system, or are DIY solutions or third-party options recommended? I am also interested in how to properly install the castors without compromising stability or design. I look forward to your tips, experiences, and recommendations!

I cut MDF boards (about 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick) and screwed them under the shelf before attaching the casters.Nice idea! The casters work really well on those self-cut wooden plates for me. It gives the whole thing a subtle DIY touch that you don’t even notice. And casters with brakes are a must—nothing’s more annoying than the shelf rolling away while cleaning.
Oh, and if you’re looking for something different: designer casters made of rubber or with a stainless steel look give the furniture a special touch without compromising everyday usability. Especially for a MEDIA SHELF, it looks better than standard plastic casters. Just make sure to check the load capacity!
I also installed casters on my BESTÅ. As mentioned before, the important factors are the correct load capacity and proper attachment. I chose swivel casters with a mounting plate (2 inches diameter), which I supported with small wooden plates because my shelving unit didn’t have any attachment points at the bottom. This way, the casters are very stable. You can engage the brake when needed, and then the unit stays firmly in place.
