nurettin812 May 2023 08:37Hello everyone, I am planning to equip my Ikea BESTÅ shelving unit with castors to make it more flexible and mobile. However, I am still unsure which types of castors are compatible with the BESTÅ system and what to consider when choosing them. The shelving unit will mainly be used as a TV and media furniture piece, so it should be stable but also light enough to move when needed. How important are size, load capacity, and attachment method when selecting castors? Does Ikea offer specific castors for this system, or are DIY solutions or third-party options recommended? I am also interested in how to properly install the castors without compromising stability or design. I look forward to your tips, experiences, and recommendations!
Hello nurettin8, your project is definitely doable, I’m happy to help! With Ikea BESTÅ, you can generally use different types of casters, and the important points are:
- Load capacity: The casters should support at least the weight of the fully loaded shelf unit plus some safety margin.
- Size: Larger casters roll more easily but are more noticeable. Smaller casters are less visible but can get stuck on uneven floors.
- Attachment: Casters are usually mounted with screws or snap-in systems, so you need to check whether your BESTÅ unit has shelves or frames where you can attach the casters.
Ikea itself does not offer official casters for BESTÅ, but many people use furniture casters from hardware stores or online shops – especially swivel casters with locking brakes are very popular.
For mounting, I recommend using angle brackets or plates that you screw onto the underside to attach the casters. This keeps the furniture structure intact and ensures the casters hold better. Make sure the mounting surfaces are stable and can bear the load. If you want, I can also prepare a step-by-step guide for you.

For BESTÅ, I recommend swivel casters with threaded mounting, about 50mm (2 inches) in diameter. This way, you can screw them directly under the bottom panel. Make sure to choose casters with a good load capacity (at least 20 kg (44 lbs) per caster) and a locking brake if the shelf unit needs to stay in place.

Regarding the necessary steps:
- First, identify the exact material of the bottom shelf (wood, MDF, laminate).
- Use metal angle brackets from a hardware store with appropriate screws (usually 3-4 mm diameter) securely mounted underneath.
- Consider using self-adhesive felt pads as protection between the brackets and the shelf to prevent damage or squeaking.
- Install casters with a minimum diameter of 50 mm (2 inches) — smaller casters tend to get stuck on carpets or uneven floors.
- For attachment, I recommend swivel casters with mounting plates; these are more secure than threaded stem casters.
- When positioning the casters, ensure stable weight distribution by placing at least four casters at each corner point.
The load capacity should not be underestimated: a fully loaded BESTÅ unit can weigh 30-40 kg (66-88 lbs). Choose casters that together can support at least twice that weight to increase durability.
Lastly: For a media shelf, it’s important that the unit does not roll away accidentally. Therefore, locking mechanisms on at least two casters are highly recommended.
How large is your BESTÅ, and what material is the bottom shelf made of? Are there already mounting points, or will you be attaching completely from below?

How large is your BESTÅ, and what material is the base panel made of? Are there already mounting points, or will you have to attach everything completely from below?Thank you for the detailed response! My BESTÅ unit is 120 cm (47 inches) wide, 40 cm (16 inches) deep, and 38 cm (15 inches) high. The base panel is MDF with a painted finish, typical for Ikea. There are no mounting points with holes, so I would have to attach directly to the underside of the bottom panel. The cabinet is fully assembled, and I want to change the appearance and stability as little as possible. My main concern is the mounting issue, as I don’t know how to securely fit the casters without pre-drilled holes. Are there any special techniques for this, or should I work with additional panels or wooden reinforcements? I would also like to avoid the casters becoming loose later or damaging the cabinet.

I would like to add: Unfortunately, Ikea does not offer pre-made casters for BESTÅ shelves, so any retrofitting must be done carefully to ensure stability. As mentioned before, you should install small reinforcement plates made of wood or metal on the underside to provide secure anchoring for the screws. I cut MDF boards about 5 mm (0.2 inches) thick and screwed them under the shelf before attaching the casters. This helps distribute the weight better and ensures the screws hold firmly. It also helps to apply wood glue to the screws before tightening to prevent them from pulling out.
Casters with mounting plates that can be adjusted in size are practical. For your medium-sized shelf, four casters mounted at each corner would be ideal. Also, make sure to use casters with brakes to prevent the shelf from moving.
If aesthetics matter to you, you can choose plates that match the color or even paint them to blend with the shelf. Although this adds a bit of extra work, it significantly increases durability.
