Hello everyone,
I’m planning to equip my IKEA Billy shelves with lighting to significantly enhance their appearance and improve the visibility of the shelf contents. I’m considering using LED light strips or recessed lights. It’s important to me that the system is as discreet as possible, does not cause visible cable clutter, and is easy to install. I’m also wondering whether power supply should be via batteries or an electrical outlet, especially regarding safety and continuous operation.
Do any of you have tested solutions or recommendations? Which types of lighting work well with the Billy shelves? And does anyone have tips on the technical implementation, such as the best way to attach or conceal the lighting? Thanks in advance for your expertise and ideas!

Hello leah55,
I understand your concerns well, as I recently completed the same project. For me, it was especially important that the cables didn’t hang loosely and that the whole setup would be durable. I bought LED strips that are stuck behind the shelves. It looks clean and creates nice indirect lighting.
However, I initially had doubts because wiring and connection can seem complicated, especially if you don’t have electrical experience. But I took it step by step, and everything worked out well.
I would prioritize that first, especially if you might want to move or rearrange the shelves later. It’s best to use adhesive pads that can be removed easily.
I secured the cables under the shelves with small clips so that nothing hangs down. Regarding your safety concern: I chose a plug-in option because batteries are not a long-term solution for me.
I’m curious to see what you decide! I’m happy to share more details if you want.

Hi leah55,
take a look at LED aluminum profiles with frosted covers, which provide even lighting. Installation is usually possible directly on the shelf using screws or adhesive tape. Power supply via USB adapters is convenient, often combined with a timer.
If you want something simple, battery-powered LED light strips are an option, but you will need to replace the batteries regularly.

Hello leah55,
I took the liberty of summarizing the key points to consider when lighting BILLY shelves:
1. Type of lighting: LED strips or light bars are ideal since they are slim and energy-efficient. 12V LEDs are often used to ensure safety.
2. Installation: The easiest option is LED strips with 3M adhesive tape. Alternatively, you can use LED aluminum profiles or small spotlights that are mounted with screws.
3. Power supply: Plug-in power is the most reliable option. Battery power is often used for base cabinets or retrofits.
4. Wiring: Cables can usually be well hidden in the shelf groove or routed along the shelf frame with cable clips to keep them out of sight.
5. Switch: A hidden or magnetic switch makes operation more convenient.
Common mistakes include using the wrong power supply or inadequate adhesion of the LEDs, which can cause durability issues.
If you like, I can also provide you with a detailed step-by-step guide for installation and wiring.

Hello leah55,
I think it’s great that you want to enhance your BILLY shelf with lighting – it really makes a difference and creates a cozy atmosphere!
Here are 4 important points from my experience:
- LED strips are easy to install. Make sure to buy high-quality strips with dimmable features.
- For power supply, I recommend using mains power if the shelf is close to an electrical outlet. Batteries are better suited for temporary setups.
- You can neatly hide cables in cable ducts, which are simple surface-mounted solutions and don’t require drilling.
- Test the lighting effect before permanently fixing it in place – it’s often helpful to experiment with different color temperatures, especially warm white, which tends to create the coziest ambiance.
If you like, I can also share my sources for where to buy them.

Leah55, that sounds like a great project! I equipped my BILLY shelves with LED light strips, which I installed behind the shelves. The installation was very easy, and the result is simply fantastic 🙂
My tip: Make sure to use waterproof LED strips in case you wipe over them with water. I also powered them using a plug-in power supply and paired it with a Bluetooth switch controlled via smartphone – this makes operation really convenient!
Have fun with your DIY! You can do it!
