tatianata23 Nov 2017 11:17Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a Malm bed (Ikea), and now I need to dismantle it due to space constraints to make it easier to transport. Unfortunately, taking it apart isn’t straightforward because there are various metal fittings and screws that I can’t simply unscrew without risking damage to the furniture.
My question is: What is the best and easiest way to dismantle Malm furniture, especially the bed frame, without damaging the material or bending any parts? Are there special tools or tricks I should keep in mind when disassembling it? A rough step-by-step guide on how to proceed would also be very helpful, so I can reassemble everything later without any problems.
Thank you in advance for any helpful tips!

Hello tatianata,
From my experience, disassembling MALM furniture, especially beds with integrated drawers and metal fittings, requires some patience. It is important to first systematically loosen all screws, but avoid over-tightening or forcing them, as screws and dowels are often secured with a plastic sleeve.
A Phillips screwdriver, and if needed, an Allen key (hex key), are usually the most useful tools here. I recommend taking photos or documenting the steps before disassembly to make reassembly easier later.
With the bed frame, be careful not to bend the metal slats that support the mattress, as this can negatively affect stability. If you still have the furniture manual, it’s worth reviewing it, as it often contains notes on disassembly.
If you have more specific questions, feel free to ask.

You’ll usually find screws at the corners and along the sides; turn them counterclockwise. Carefully separate the parts, especially the drawers and side panels.
It’s a good idea to collect the screws in small bags to avoid losing anything later.

Regarding the challenge of easy disassembly of MALM furniture, the following points should be considered:
The construction often uses metal fasteners combined with wooden connectors. Carefully loosening the screws is essential; a suitable Phillips or Allen key should always be used to prevent slipping and damage to the screw heads.
The recommended method is to disassemble the furniture in the reverse order of the original assembly. Start with the drawers, then the slatted bed base, and finally the connectors.
For documentation, it is advisable to record each step either in writing or by taking photos to ensure successful reassembly.
Regarding tools, besides a Phillips screwdriver, a small hammer can be helpful to carefully loosen wooden dowels from their holes if they are stuck. However, extra caution is necessary to avoid damaging the edges.
This approach has proven to be reliable and gentle on the materials.

One more important tip for easily disassembling MALM beds:
This is truly the most efficient approach. Since Ikea furniture is usually modular, you can often rely on the original assembly instructions, which are mostly available online.
Sometimes a simple trick helps with stuck screws: placing a rubber band between the screwdriver and the screw head increases grip, making it easier to loosen stubborn screws without damaging them.
Also, when removing the drawers, pay attention to the runners. These often have small metal tabs or plastic catches that need to be pressed or lifted first before the drawer can be completely removed.
This way, you can avoid damage to the hardware and wood, preserving the furniture’s condition for later reassembly.
