Hello everyone, I am planning to get rid of some of my IKEA Hemnes furniture and want to do so in the most recycling-friendly way possible. My question is how to dispose of these pieces without simply throwing them away or causing unnecessary energy waste. I know the furniture is mostly made of wood, partly with metal fittings, and I want to avoid losing these valuable materials. Are there any proven methods or local facilities that specialize in the sustainable recycling of Hemnes furniture? Or perhaps tips on how to dismantle the furniture before disposal to separate the materials more effectively? I look forward to your recommendations!

In the Rhein-Main area, there are numerous local recycling centers that are very efficient at separating wood and metal. Additionally, some municipal waste management organizations offer special collection events for furniture, usually in spring and autumn. If you like, I can send you an overview of the common locations and services via private message.

And yes, many social institutions often accept furniture donations, provided the items are still in good condition. This way, you avoid disposal and promote reuse directly.

Often you hear about this, but I wasn’t sure if it applies to furniture like HEMNES.

Indeed, furniture is often accepted during many collection events, but usually the quality and safety are checked.

Therefore, a preliminary cleaning and dismantling of unstable or damaged parts would be helpful. I’m also curious: What is the volume of your furniture? Are you planning to dispose of many individual cabinets or just a few pieces? I ask because some recycling centers have tiered pricing or offer pickup services.

It’s about 3-4 Hemnes dressers plus some shelves and individual parts from desks. So quite a substantial amount, but everything is disassembled and ready for storage. Thanks for the tip about the prices – I hadn’t considered that yet.
