Hello everyone, I am currently planning to furnish my bathroom with furniture from the Ikea Platsa series. I am attracted by the flexibility of these modules, but I have some questions regarding their adaptation specifically for the humid bathroom environment. How can Ikea PLATSA furniture be modified or supplemented to meet the special requirements of a bathroom? In particular, I am interested in:
- Options for moisture resistance, such as surface treatments or suitable accessories
- Adjustments during installation to accommodate, for example, water pipes or electrical outlets
- Recommendations for sensible combinations of PLATSA elements that make efficient use of storage space without overcrowding the bathroom
- Practical tips for protection against water splashes and mold

If you have personal experience or know of professional modifications, I would be very grateful for detailed advice or critical assessments. Thanks in advance!

A frequently underestimated aspect is sealing the surfaces. PLATSA furniture is primarily designed for dry indoor areas, but you can treat the visible surfaces with water-repellent paint or clear lacquer to minimize moisture absorption.

Additionally, be sure to use rubber seals or edge protectors on the edges, especially near the floor level. For installation, I recommend not placing the furniture directly on the floor, but using appropriate feet or plinths to prevent standing water from seeping in.

Regarding storage space: modularity allows for wall-mounted options to keep the floor area clear and reduce moisture damage. For water pipes, a precise measurement beforehand is advisable, with possible cutouts or adjustments to the back panels if needed.

In summary, protective coating, elevated installation, sealing profiles, and customized cuts are the most important measures.

It is important to record the exact measurements and locations of water pipes and electrical outlets very precisely. PLATSA components can be modified by drilling or cutting out sections of the back or side panels, as long as the load-bearing capacity is not compromised.

A practical approach is to obtain or cut thinner material for the back panels to create a precise fit for the pipes. Make sure to pay close attention to the stability of the connecting blocks.

Regarding moisture: Using moisture-resistant sealing tapes at joints, providing ventilation gaps behind the furniture, and avoiding direct contact with water will help minimize long-term damage and mold growth.

A combination of accurate planning and careful execution is essential to successfully adapt the modular PLATSA system for use in the bathroom area.

To address Kleon51’s question in a more technical way: The PLATSA series is based on a carcass made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which is not specifically water-resistant. Direct exposure to moisture is therefore problematic.

- I recommend a complete post-treatment of all visible surfaces, especially the edges, with a moisture-repellent wood protective varnish, applied in several layers to prevent moisture penetration.

- For back panels, I suggest replacing the standard MDF panels with water-resistant versions made of blue or green moisture-repellent MDF, or substituting them with composite boards based on PVC. These generally offer better protection.

- When making cutouts for cable passages, use a jigsaw carefully. It is important to avoid cracks in the particleboard, as these could later serve as entry points for water.

- Wall mounting should be done with a gap. I always use profiles that maintain a distance of 2–3 cm (0.8–1.2 inches) from the wall, ensuring ventilation behind the unit so that moisture can escape.

- When installing drawers or doors, I also recommend adding seals on the inside to minimize splashing water inside.

- Additionally, feet or furniture bases can be protected against excess moisture by adding plastic covers or by mounting the furniture to the wall with a floating base, leaving it off the floor.

This modular approach also offers the significant advantage that individual elements can be quickly replaced or dried if moisture does penetrate.

In conclusion: The combination of material selection, workmanship, and installation determines durability in humid environments.

Practical Tips for Protection Against Water Splashes and Mold

I would recommend sealing the edges and sides of furniture against the walls with silicone and always maintaining a small gap from the floor.

Use waterproof mats or trays on top of the furniture to avoid direct contact with water.

Mold can be prevented by ensuring the bathroom is well ventilated and that furniture is not placed too close to the walls.

Hello Kleon51,

I would like to add that when planning the PLATSA elements for the bathroom, you should pay close attention to the areas that are particularly humid, such as near the sink, shower, or bathtub. The furniture should ideally not be placed directly in areas affected by splashing water.

One option is to mount PLATSA modules off the floor, at a distance that allows for easy cleaning and drying. This helps protect against rising moisture and makes maintenance easier.

Additionally, you can line the base units with waterproof membranes or protective panels behind the furniture to protect the walls and the backs of the cabinets.

Also, make sure to check the compatibility of your measures with the bathroom ventilation—good air circulation is essential to reduce moisture and prevent mold.

If you are not experienced with DIY modifications, I recommend having a professional handle the cutouts for pipes and the installation of seals, as imprecise cuts can cause permanent damage to the furniture.

I hope these tips help you.
