Hello everyone,

I want to customize my IKEA Besta shelf and am looking for ideas and practical tips on how to do this using wooden strips and decorative elements. Specifically, I’m interested in which types of wood and molding profiles work best, the most effective methods for attaching the strips—gluing, screwing, or nailing—and which decorative elements fit well without compromising the minimalist design of the Besta.

If anyone has experience with nicely framing or accentuating the edges or frames of the Besta units in a way that doesn’t look too busy, I’d love to hear about it. Suggestions on color matching or the use of surface treatments would also be very helpful.

Looking forward to your creative and practical ideas!

Hello JOTOGO,

this is a great project! When customizing IKEA Besta with wooden strips, there are some basic guidelines I recommend. First of all, solid wood strips such as pine, beech, or oak are very popular because they are sturdy and easy to work with. Thin strips in sizes like 10x10mm (0.4x0.4 inches) or 12x12mm (0.5x0.5 inches) are well received since they offer clean lines without being too dominant.

For fixing, I usually use small nails or screws, depending on the required load-bearing capacity. Adhesive with mounting glue also works but is less durable, especially under stress. It is also important to smooth the wooden strips beforehand with sandpaper and, if desired, treat them with oil or varnish to protect the surface.

Regarding decorative elements: metal accents or simple handles in brass or brushed steel complement the wood well and integrate the design harmoniously without appearing too elaborate.

If you like, I can also explain step-by-step how I attach the strips to the Besta fronts.

Hi JOTOGO,

I agree with klo61 but would like to suggest a structured guide in case you want to cut and install the wooden strips yourself:

- Selection of wooden strips: oak, beech, or spruce – depending on whether you prefer a warmer or cooler tone.
- Profile of the strips: flat strips or rounded edges, depending on taste. For Besta, simple and straight strips are usually the best choice.
- Cutting: use a miter saw to cut to the correct lengths so the corners fit neatly together.
- Surface treatment before installation: oiling, staining, or painting, preferably before attaching to ensure clean edges.
- Fixing: I recommend wood glue combined with small nails or fine screws to ensure the best hold.
- Finishing: sanding the joints and possibly applying a final seal.

For the decorative part: imagine combining wooden strips with delicate metal accents or colored inlays (e.g., veneer or thin metal). Another option is integrating small, subtle LED strips behind the wood to softly illuminate the shelf.

Important: pay close attention to exact measurements during installation so all strips fit perfectly and no gaps remain.

Hello JOTOGO,

For your project of customizing IKEA Besta units with wooden strips and decorative elements, precise planning and understanding of the material properties are, in my opinion, essential. Here is a detailed look at the different aspects:

1. Wood Types and Molding Profiles:
- Solid wood is durable, although different wood species vary in their expansion and contraction behavior. Beech is hard and consistent, oak looks more premium, and spruce is affordable but softer.
- Profiles: A simple edge strip measuring 10x20 mm (0.4x0.8 inches) offers good coverage, while shadow gap moldings of 6x12 mm (0.24x0.47 inches) create a more modern look with shadow lines.

2. Fastening Techniques:
- Screws with concealed holes (e.g., countersunk heads and cover caps) are more durable than adhesives and prevent later detachment.
- Gluing is an option on smooth surfaces with low mechanical stress. The right PU glue or wood adhesive that remains flexible is important.
- Nails are cheaper but can cause splitting in thin strips; pre-drilled holes are recommended to avoid this.

3. Surface Treatment:
- Spray lacquers or wood densification with oils before installation ensure even color and protection against moisture.

4. Combination with Decorative Elements:
- Minimalist metal accents, such as slim aluminum profiles with anodized finishes, provide a nice contrast.
- The targeted use of indirect lighting behind the strips also complements the applied texture.

One question for you: Do you want to create a rustic-warm or a minimalist-modern look? This will help us tailor the choice of moldings and finishes even better.

Thanks for the detailed insights! I’m leaning toward a minimalist-modern design, but with warm wooden accents to add a natural touch to the IKEA Besta shelving unit. So, rather clean lines, no ornate moldings, but some wood to soften the cool effect of the lacquer finish.

In addition to wooden moldings, I’d also be interested in options with integrated color accents—something not too bold, but rather subtle color contrasts, possibly with a matte finish.

The shelving unit will be placed in the living room and should look natural while also feeling timelessly elegant and not too cluttered.

That sounds great! For this design concept, I would recommend slim oak wood strips with a matte oil finish. The color of oak wood complements most Besta colors beautifully, especially white or anthracite.

For installation, I suggest using wood glue along with small concealed nails on the back or inner edges of the strips. This way, you avoid visible screw heads. Miter cuts (45 degrees) work best for the corners to keep the overall look clean and high-quality.

For color accents, you might consider adding small matte brass or copper details—such as narrow metal strips or small corner protectors. These provide subtle highlights without overpowering the wood design.

Would you also like to redesign the doors or drawers, for example with vinyl wraps or a satin finish paint in matching colors? That could complete the overall look nicely.
