roniruHello everyone, I am currently planning to convert my IKEA Besta cabinet into a functional shoe cabinet, but I want to avoid drilling into the walls or the cabinet itself. My challenge is how to design or add shelves and compartments that are optimal for shoes – providing enough air circulation, stable surfaces, and saving as much space as possible. Additionally, I want to achieve this without using tools and especially without drilling, since I live in a rental apartment and don’t want to leave any marks. Has anyone had experience with such a conversion or perhaps some creative ideas on how to use the Besta as a functional shoe cabinet “without drilling”? Thanks in advance!

Alternatively, self-adhesive clothing rods or hangers that don’t require holes can be helpful.

I am currently planning to convert my IKEA Besta cabinet into a functional shoe cabinet, but I don’t want to drill into the walls or the cabinet itself. To convert the Besta into a shoe cabinet without drilling, I recommend a modular approach. Specifically, I would proceed as follows:
- Use adjustable shelves made of plastic or metal that attach to the sides with clamp mechanisms, requiring no drilling.
- Instead of traditional compartments, you can use small, stackable shoe racks or grids that fit inside the existing cabinet and allow better air circulation.
- For stability, Velcro solutions can help secure the modules or shelves without damaging the furniture.
- Consider the depth and height of typical shoes (sneakers, boots, etc.) so that the compartment layout remains flexible.
I’m still wondering how large and heavy the shoes you mainly want to store are? This helps to suggest suitable materials and solutions more precisely.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of conversion or maybe some creative ideas on how I could use the Besta practically "without drilling" and still functional as a shoe cabinet? Here is a simple step-by-step guide on how to convert your Besta into a shoe cabinet without drilling:
- First: Purchase or find adjustable shelf inserts that fit without screws, such as plug-in systems made of plastic or metal.
- Then: Place flat, non-slip mats or grids as shelves to allow ventilation for the shoes.
- If needed, use storage boxes that fit into the compartments, as they often come with spacers or clip mechanisms.
- For extra stability of the shelves, self-adhesive rubber or silicone pads placed underneath the shelves or inserts help and also prevent slipping.
- Finally: Test different arrangements with your existing shoes, since different types of shoes require varying heights and depths.
A common mistake is using cable ties or hook-and-loop straps that are too small—it's better to choose slightly stronger ones when securing these systems.
I hope this helps!
