ᐅ How can I smartly increase the storage space in Ikea Metod base cabinets?

ONURCHENHello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question about the IKEA Metod kitchen series, specifically regarding the base cabinets. My goal is to increase the available storage space as efficiently and cleverly as possible. Base cabinets often have a fairly simple basic structure – a large interior space, maybe a few shelves. Are there any proven tips on how to optimize and expand this storage space? Possible options could be additional pull-out drawers, custom dividers, smart organizing systems, or even modifications to the cabinet interiors. I’m using these cabinets in a relatively small kitchen, so every centimeter (0.4 inches) counts. Who can share their experience or creative ideas on how to get more storage out of IKEA Metod base cabinets without having to replace the entire furniture?

There are actually quite a few great tricks to turn your Metod base cabinets into storage wonders. My favorite: internal pull-outs! Just screw one or more drawers into the large cabinet space, and you can easily see everything even in the deepest corner without having to pull everything out constantly.
Also, height-adjustable shelves are super practical! They let you stack your items better and make optimal use of the space.
And casually: door openers with built-in storage – like hooks or small baskets on the inside of the doors. This way, you make perfect use of space that would otherwise be wasted.
A small bonus: with tape and transparent boxes or inserts, you can keep stuff well organized and easily accessible. Good luck! 😊

Sometimes you think a closet is just simple, but with the right pull-outs and dividers, you can create real storage magic!
You can also check out IKEA’s VARIERA series, which has great inserts and boxes specifically designed for Metod. That really helps reduce clutter immediately.
And don’t worry: even if your kitchen is small, a little organization not only frees up more space but also makes working much more comfortable! So just give it a try and keep at it!
To effectively increase the storage space of IKEA Metod base cabinets, I recommend the following approach:
- First, check whether the cabinets have adjustable shelves and if they are installed at suitable intervals. This allows you to optimize the interior space according to your needs.
- Then consider installing internal pull-out drawers, which make accessing deep areas much easier and also improve the use of available space.
- Shelf inserts and small organizers, for example for spices or cleaning supplies, that can be mounted on the cabinet doors are also helpful.
- Optionally, you can attach individual hooks or small containers to the side walls using pegboards (e.g., made of wood) – this creates extra storage space for small items and helps prevent clutter.
A common mistake is trying to stack too much in a deep compartment without clear organization. It is better to divide the space into separate sections so that everything has its place and remains easily accessible. If you like, I can provide more details on compatible pull-outs and recommended dimensions.

Allow me to explain in more detail the topic of maximizing storage space with IKEA Metod base cabinets. First, it is important to understand that the internal dimensions of the Metod frame are standardized, which gives you great flexibility when choosing accessories.
Here are some steps to make the most of the available storage space:
1. Drawers instead of shelves: Pull-out drawers or internal drawers (widths of 80 cm (31½ inches), 60 cm (23½ inches), or 40 cm (15¾ inches), depending on the cabinet width) provide better visibility and eliminate dead corners.
2. Adjustable dividers: Using partition panels, separators, or plastic bins allows you to customize the drawers for different items. This way, you don’t just stack items, but optimize space both horizontally and vertically.
3. Door racks: The cabinet doors often offer unused space – IKEA offers special storage boxes that you can attach to the inside of the doors. These are ideal for flat items or small utensils.
4. Pegboards and hooks on side panels: If the cabinet is properly assembled, you can create personalized organization on the sides using hooks, small boxes, or holders.
5. Work height optimization: Sometimes combining different cabinet heights (e.g., toe kicks, lower drawers) helps to work ergonomically and simultaneously optimize storage space.
6. Material and load capacity: When selecting accessories, make sure they have the necessary weight capacity to safely hold heavy kitchen appliances.
Finally, I would be interested to know: Are you looking for more storage space for large items like pots and pans, or do you want to better organize many small utensils? This would help provide more targeted advice.

Finally, I’d like to know: Are you looking for more storage space for large items like pots and pans, or do you want to better organize many small utensils? Thanks to everyone for the replies so far, especially lorena for the detailed input. My long base cabinets are mainly intended for large cooking utensils and pans, but also for storing supplies in bigger containers.
I’ve noticed that the standard shelves often aren’t enough because I want to stack both tall and flatter items on top of each other. However, it’s frustrating that eventually everything ends up piled on top, making it hard to access the items on the bottom. I think for me, pull-out drawers and adjustable shelves that are quite flexible in height are important.
Could someone possibly recommend which pull-out drawers or boxes from the IKEA range work best for occasional use with large cookware? I’d appreciate tips on durability and ease of use! Thanks so far.
