Hello everyone,

I have been using several IKEA Malm furniture pieces for some time now, and I would like to clean them more effectively. My main concern is to achieve streak-free and as scratch-free as possible results on the smooth surfaces, without using harsh chemicals that might damage the melamine coating.

I am also interested in tips for cleaning the insides and drawers, as dust and sometimes small stains often accumulate there, which are not easily removed with a regular dust cloth.

Can anyone recommend a detailed guide or proven methods for cleaning Malm furniture effectively and gently?

Thank you!

Hello reece,

For cleaning IKEA Malm furniture, I recommend a step-by-step approach:

1. Remove coarse dirt with a dry microfiber cloth.
2. To eliminate dust and light dirt, use a slightly damp cloth with lukewarm water.
3. For stubborn stains, a mild dish detergent diluted in water can be used. Important: never use aggressive or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the melamine surface.
4. After cleaning, dry the surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth to prevent streaks.

For cleaning drawers and inner sides, I suggest pulling them out completely. Dust and crumbs can then be easily removed with a vacuum cleaner attachment, followed by wiping with a damp cloth.

If grease or oily stains occur, a special furniture cleaner designed for melamine is advisable, as it is gentle and non-aggressive.

I hope this structured guide helps you.

Hello reece,

I would like to add another aspect to your thoughts, especially when it comes to the long-term care of your Malm furniture.

That is absolutely correct. Melamine or coated surfaces are quite durable, but the edges and corners can suffer if you scrub too hard or use inappropriate cleaning products.

My approach is as follows:

1. Regularly remove dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to avoid scratches caused by dirt particles.
2. For wet cleaning, I use a homemade solution of lukewarm water and a small amount of neutral soap (pH-neutral, no aggressive surfactants). This is applied to the cloth, not directly onto the furniture.
3. I avoid saturating the surface with too much water since standing water can cause the edges to swell.
4. For stubborn spots, I carefully work with a very fine, non-scratching sponge and always test first on an inconspicuous area.
5. Always wipe dry immediately after cleaning.

Regarding the drawers:
To thoroughly remove dirt and dust, I regularly take the drawers out completely and clean them gently in the bathtub or shower with mild soap. Afterwards, I let them dry well before reinstalling.

Achieving a streak-free result largely depends on the choice of cloth. High-quality microfiber cloths with a dense structure minimize the risk of streaks and scratches.

One more tip: Furniture care products marketed as special melamine conditioners are currently quite controversial. I personally avoid them, as normal care does not cause visible signs of aging.

Have you tried adjusting the pressure you apply with the cloth? Rubbing too hard can cause more damage than good.

What kind of stains are giving you trouble specifically? That would help to provide more precise advice.

Hello reece,

I think your question is very important because many underestimate how delicate melamine surfaces on Malm furniture can be, especially when cleaning.

I can confirm that – instead, I recommend a gentle standard procedure, which I’ll outline for you as a small cleaning tutorial:

1. Preparation: Remove all items from the surface.
2. Remove dust by folding a clean, dry microfiber cloth several times.
3. Cleaning solution: Use a mixture of about 1 liter (1 quart) of lukewarm water and 2-3 drops of mild, fragrance-free liquid soap.
4. Lightly dampen the microfiber cloth so that no drops remain on the surface.
5. Wipe in straight strokes, not circular, to avoid streaks.
6. Immediately dry with another clean, dry microfiber cloth.

For the interior areas and drawers, I have the following recommendations:

- Use a vacuum cleaner with an upholstery or brush attachment for dust and crumbs.
- For stubborn stains: gently dab with a cloth slightly moistened with the above soap solution.

One more tip for damage prevention: avoid leaving wet objects on the surface for extended periods, as moisture can damage or cause the edges to swell.

If you like, I can also provide tips on how to minimize small scratches on melamine using suitable household items – just let me know. 🙂
