I have several IKEA Brimnes furniture pieces at home, including sideboards, wardrobes, and nightstands. Since the surfaces are mostly made of coated wood-based materials, I’m unsure how to clean them most effectively and with minimal effort without damaging the surface. Can you give me tips on how to clean BRIMNES furniture, which cleaning products are suitable, and the best way to remove dust and stains? It is especially important to me to avoid using too many different products and to keep the furniture looking good for as long as possible. What is your cleaning routine when caring for BRIMNES furniture at home?

Basically, BRIMNES furniture is coated with melamine, which is fairly resistant to scratches and moisture. For quick and effective cleaning at home, I recommend regularly removing dust with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. This prevents dirt from settling.

For stains and heavier dirt, a damp cloth with mild dish soap is suitable. It’s important that the cloth is not wet or dripping, as too much moisture can damage the edges. Always wipe immediately afterward with a dry cloth.

Avoid aggressive cleaners, abrasives, or acetone-based products, as these can damage the coating. This way, you can keep your furniture well-maintained with very little effort on a daily basis.

That is correct. Here is a clear summary of the cleaning methods:

- Daily dusting with a dry, soft cloth
- For stains or sticky residues, use a slightly damp cloth with some neutral dish soap
- Wipe dry after cleaning to remove any moisture
- Do not use abrasive cleaners or harsh chemicals
- Avoid excessive moisture, especially around edges and joints

This approach preserves the surface from premature wear and prevents swelling of the materials. More intensive cleaning does not provide any measurable benefit for regular maintenance.

The most important thing: use dry dusting cloths. Only clean with moisture for stains. Do not use harsh cleaners. Wipe dry afterwards, and you’re done.

To clean the BRIMNES furniture gently and effectively, I recommend a more detailed plan that ensures the surface is preserved:

1. For regular cleaning, I use a microfiber cloth, as it captures dust very well and is gentle on surfaces.

2. If necessary, slightly dampen the cloth, ideally with water mixed with a few drops of a neutral, pH-balanced dish detergent.

3. Avoid any abrasive additives or alcohol-based cleaners, as these can cause the melamine surface to become dull over time.

4. To reach hard-to-access corners or profiles, I use cotton swabs or soft brushes.

5. Immediately wipe any damp areas with a dry cloth to prevent moisture marks.

6. For minor scratches on the surface, you can try refreshing it with a special wax or furniture polish designed for coated surfaces—use sparingly and test compatibility first.

One question: Do you use the furniture in heavily used areas like a children’s room or hallway? This might make adjusting the cleaning frequency advisable.

That’s a good tip. I would add that you should always test any polish in an inconspicuous area first. Melamine surfaces do not tolerate every polish well, and improper use can cause spotting.

Also, to remove fingerprints, I have found that a chamois cloth works well. It absorbs grease effectively and doesn’t leave streaks.
