Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I bought an IKEA Besta system, mainly because of its flexible design options. Now I am facing the challenge of cleaning the surfaces as gently yet effectively as possible, without causing any damage. Most of the tips in the manual are quite general, and I want to avoid using harsh chemicals since I’m concerned about affecting the matte lacquer or the foil surface.

I’m particularly interested in which cleaning products and methods have proven effective for removing fingerprints, dust, light stains, and possible grease marks. Do you also have experience with homemade cleaners or special microfiber cloths?

I look forward to your tips and advice on how to best care for the BESTA surfaces.

Hello ulisessu49,

Thank you very much for your detailed inquiry! When cleaning IKEA BESTA surfaces, which are usually covered with a melamine-coated foil or a matte lacquer finish, care should be taken to avoid scratches and possible dull spots.

Here are some important points and tips:

- Always use a soft, damp microfiber cloth without any additional abrasive cleaners.
- For normal dirt, plain water is usually sufficient.
- For greasy stains, a mild dish soap dissolved in lukewarm water works well. Important: Wring out the cloth thoroughly so it is only slightly damp.
- Avoid aggressive cleaners, solvents, bleaches, or highly alkaline products.
- After cleaning, the surface should be wiped immediately with a dry, clean cloth to prevent water marks.

If you want to try homemade cleaners, a mixture of water with a splash of white vinegar works well, but always test it first in an inconspicuous area. Vinegar has slight disinfecting properties and removes greasy dirt, but it may dull sensitive foils.

In summary: Clean gently, use mild products, and protect the material.

I’m happy to answer any further questions about specific stains or types of dirt.

Best regards!

I can only confirm that. I once made the mistake of using a stronger all-purpose cleaner on my BESTA surface, and immediately the slightly matte finish was noticeably altered in some areas. That annoyed me a lot because it happened so quickly.

It is also important not to rub too hard when cleaning. Sometimes you think you need to scrub thoroughly, but the surface is more sensitive than you might expect. I now always use a soft microfiber cloth, slightly dampened, and that works well for me.

If you have children or pets who tend to make messes, I also recommend cleaning regularly and proactively to prevent tougher stains from setting in.

You might feel uncertain sometimes because the IKEA instructions are rather superficial, but with gentle care, the surface stays looking good for a long time.

Hello everyone,

to continue discussing the gentle and effective cleaning of IKEA BESTA surfaces, I would like to add a small guide with practical tips.

1. Preparation:
- Always remove dust first with a dry microfiber cloth or a soft duster. This prevents dirt particles from scratching the surface later on.

2. Cleaning light dirt:
- Moisten a microfiber cloth with lukewarm water, then wring it out well.
- Gently wipe the surface.

3. Cleaning heavier dirt:
- Use a mild soap solution, for example with a neutral dishwashing detergent.
- Dark stains or grease can usually be removed effectively this way.
- Important: After cleaning, wipe the surface again with a damp cloth without any detergent.

4. Special notes:
- Avoid using abrasive cleaners, harsh sponges, or steel wool, as they damage the surface.
- Be cautious with homemade vinegar-water solutions, since acetic acid can harm laminate surfaces if used for too long or too concentrated.
- For stubborn stains, a specialized plastic cleaner suitable for melamine-coated surfaces is recommended.

5. Drying:
- Always finish by wiping with a clean, dry cloth to prevent water spots.

A common mistake is cleaning with too much moisture, which can penetrate joints and damage the surface over time.

Following this sequence will help you avoid damage and extend the lifespan of your BESTA furniture.

For fingerprints and light dust, I always recommend a dry microfiber cloth. For grease stains, use a damp cloth with a bit of mild dish soap. Afterwards, wipe again with a dry cloth to avoid streaks.
