Hello everyone,

I recently started using our IKEA Brimnes furniture in the kids’ room and want to make it child-safe. My main concern is how to secure the wardrobes and dressers so they don’t tip over or have the drawers open by themselves when my little ones pull on or climb them.

Does anyone have experience with stabilizing the IKEA Brimnes series using child safety measures? I’m specifically looking for advice on wall attachments, drawer locks, and whether there are special products that fit well and aren’t too complicated to install.

I’m also interested if any of you have created your own solutions that work well in terms of safety and everyday usability.

I’m grateful for any recommendations, including materials and installation tips.

Thank you in advance!

I would definitely use the wall anchors provided by IKEA for the Brimnes series. They are reliable when installed correctly.

You can secure drawers with child safety locks available at hardware stores. Make sure to choose ones that are easy to install and durable.

Hey Dohau,

at my kids’ place, I anchored the Brimnes chest of drawers to the wall, which is really worth it! 😊 A tip: Use screws with anchors suitable for your wall type (often different in older buildings compared to new builds). You can make the drawer locks child-friendly with a simple trick by placing them on the inside – this way they don’t look too “strict” but still secure very well.

A small DIY solution: We used fabric straps with Velcro on the inside when a lock was too complicated. It works great for quick opening and is nicely flexible. 🎉

I agree, that’s very important! At first, I also thought the IKEA fastening solution would be sufficient, but then a friend who is a tradesperson pointed out the wall composition to us, and we had to make upgrades.

I think it’s great that Dobau emphasizes safety, especially since children often act spontaneously and can sometimes become a hazard. We also found the drawer stoppers quite useful—they prevent the drawers from being fully pulled out. Maybe that could be a helpful addition for you.

To add to the helpful tips so far:

- Always use a combination of wall mounts and drawer locks, as using only one without the other is not sufficient.

- For wall mounting the Brimnes series, I recommend heavy-duty anchors, especially if the walls are made of concrete or drywall. Safety comes first.

- For securing the drawers, special child safety locks are advisable, such as magnetic locks or clamp devices, depending on your requirements and interior style.

- Also, make sure the furniture is placed away from areas where children might try to climb—keep objects on the furniture as low as possible.

The most important thing is to find a balanced approach that ensures both safety and everyday usability.

Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, our walls are drywall, so I was concerned about the stability of the mounting. I was thinking about installing additional wooden strips to create a larger surface area for the anchors. Has anyone had experience with this kind of solution?

Sounds interesting – you all probably know those bumpers, right? Are those the small rubber pieces attached to the drawers? Are they compatible with the Brimnes material?

Thanks again for all the answers and the tips about drawer safety – that was an uncertainty for me until now.
