Hello everyone, I recently bought some Ikea Besta furniture and I’m wondering how to childproof it as effectively as possible. These units are originally designed for living rooms or home offices, but since there are small children in our home, I want to prevent them from playing with drawers and doors, potentially hurting themselves or taking items they shouldn’t.

I’m looking for a solution that isn’t too complicated, works without major modifications, and doesn’t stand out too much visually. Are there any proven mechanisms, special locks, or tricks you can recommend to childproof this furniture? I would appreciate tips, product suggestions, or information on the pros and cons of different methods.

Magnetic locks are really great for children! I use them on my Besta shelves and am very satisfied! Children can’t open the doors, but I can still easily access them. What I find brilliant is that nothing is visible from the outside. The only important thing is to be precise when gluing or screwing them on. Just give it a try, you’ll be impressed!

In summary, here are some recommendations for childproof locking of Ikea BESTA furniture:

- Magnetic child locks are effective and visually unobtrusive but require careful installation.
- Clamp or clip locks are minimally invasive but offer less security against older children.
- Cabinet locks with keys increase security but may affect the appearance.

It is also important to ensure that the safety mechanisms are not meta-stable, meaning they cannot be damaged or forced open by children’s play or repeated pulling. If possible, the furniture should also be anchored to the wall to prevent tipping when opened.

I agree, especially with magnetic products, accurate fitting is essential.

However, it’s also important to consider long-term durability. Some adhesives can weaken over time due to temperature changes—especially on furniture near windows with direct sunlight or in bedrooms. Therefore, it’s advisable to check them after a few months.
