Hello everyone,

I’m facing the following issue: I own an IKEA Besta shelving unit with the standard wooden doors, and I would like to make it childproof. My challenge is that I don’t want to affect the appearance of the doors in any way. Many solutions, such as external latches or adhesive locks, bother me visually because they look too conspicuous or are applied in a messy way.

So my question to the community is: How can I securely lock IKEA Besta doors to make them childproof without damaging the furniture’s aesthetic appeal? Are there any clever, discreet, or integrated methods you have tried or would recommend? Suggestions for mechanisms that are invisible or very subtle would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your ideas and experiences!

Given your requirement, an internal solution with magnetic locks or bolts is the best option. They are completely invisible and do not affect the outward appearance of the Besta doors.

It is also possible to use so-called "child safety screws," which are installed in the hinge area. These are minimally visible but very effective and hardly noticeable visually.

You’re all really overthinking this – how about thinking a bit outside the box? 🙂

A clever idea is to use magnetic catches that are hidden inside the cabinet. Sort of like a door-to-door watchman for your BESTA – someone guarding the door but invisible. 😉

If that sounds too technical: you can also attach a thin strip on the inside that opens when pressed. The kids will try to reach in but without the trick, they’ll just end up bumping their nose on the door.

One small tip: don’t drill too much, IKEA furniture isn’t endlessly sturdy.

Magnetic contacts are clearly better than adhesive sensors.

Agreed.

Additionally: when installing magnetic contacts, the magnet must be precisely aligned. Once properly set, the locking mechanism works effortlessly and discreetly.
