Hello everyone,

I recently started setting up our kitchen with IKEA Metod cabinets, and now I have an important question: How can I childproof these cabinets so that my little kids can’t easily access dangerous kitchen utensils or cleaning products?

I’m aware that IKEA offers appropriate safety fittings, but I’m wondering if they are really practical for everyday use and what other options there are to effectively childproof Metod cabinets without compromising the appearance or convenience too much.

Has anyone had experience with special locks, magnetic or push-to-open mechanisms, or even tips for alternative safety devices?

What factors should I consider when choosing a solution to ensure the cabinets remain sturdy and keep children as effectively out of reach as possible?

I look forward to your suggestions, tips, and experiences!

It is best to install the IKEA child safety locks specifically designed for Metod cabinets. They work with a magnetic key and can only be opened by adults. Additionally, I would securely fasten all cabinets to the wall to prevent tipping.

This is a good recommendation, as IKEA does offer child-friendly locks that are specially tailored to the Metod series.

In addition, I would suggest a combination of the following measures:

- Use of magnetic catches: these are almost invisible and hardly affect the design.
- Installation of furniture locks that prevent the cabinets from fully opening.
- Securely fastening the cabinets to the wall to reduce the risk of tipping accidents.

It is important that the lock is firmly installed and not easily tampered with.

The choice should also depend on the type of use – quick-release locks provide more convenience for frequent access, while a rigid lock is more suitable for less frequent use.

This is a very important question that involves several safety considerations.

Based on my experience as a parent, I can recommend the following:

- Use the original IKEA Metod child safety locks, which are optimized for these cabinets and easy to use. They require a red magnetic key to open, so children cannot open the doors without it.

- Alternatively, there are universal magnetic locks that also work with other furniture, in case you want to combine different cabinets or incorporate existing furniture.

- Additionally, you can reinforce the locks with extra-durable cable ties or clamp devices, which can be useful for toddlers who are very persistent.

- Wall mounting all Metod cabinets is strongly recommended, since even with locked doors there is a risk of tipping if a child tries to climb on them.

- It is crucial that the locks are installed professionally—a loose lock does not provide secure protection.

The combination of mechanically secure child locks and proper installation offers the best protection for curious little explorers.
