Hello everyone, I am currently considering how to change the color of my IKEA Malm furniture without affecting its stability or functionality. The surface is usually veneered or laminate-coated, which can make direct painting more difficult. What are the best preparation methods for a durable paint application? Are there any specific primers or paints you would recommend, especially if you want to completely change the furniture’s color? Which techniques have proven effective for achieving an even, long-lasting result? I look forward to your tips and experiences!
Hello dakla, I think it’s great that you want to redesign your Malm! 🙂 A quick tip for preparation: besides sanding, thoroughly cleaning with a degreasing agent is very important, as many pieces of furniture unfortunately have fingerprints or residues that can prevent the paint from adhering properly. For the primer, you can also use a water-based bonding primer, which is more environmentally friendly and has less odor. After it dries, lightly sand it with very fine sandpaper (e.g. grit 400).
That is invaluable advice, many people underestimate this topic. If you’re using the product for the first time, I recommend practicing first on a small leftover piece.
Do you already have a color or finish in mind? Matte finishes often help to conceal small imperfections better.

Hey dakla, it’s great that you want to repaint your Malm furniture! 🙂 I painted my dresser in a light mint green and added some accents with matte clear coat. The key is patience! Let each layer dry thoroughly, ideally for 24 hours.
At first, I was also nervous about sanding, but using fine sandpaper between the coats made the surface really smooth! You can get as creative as you want – from bright colors to elegant pastels. Good luck and have fun! 😉

For lasting durability and performance, sanding and priming remain the best approach.Exactly! Thorough sanding and a high-quality primer are the foundation for a long-lasting paint finish. A quick note: Since Malm furniture is often made of particleboard with a foil coating, it’s worth checking the edges, where the foil sometimes shows through. If needed, use fine filler and sandpaper to even out small imperfections.
Regarding paint: Make sure to apply the same paint coverage to unpainted edges; otherwise, the edges will stand out visually later on.
